What Arms Race? which Region?
Test a weapon system and the world screams “Arms Race.” “Arms Race” has become a standard blurb.
Just yesterday, India tested an underwater launch missile. Promptly came the Arms Race blurb from the usual Pakistani sources. Pakistan Navy chief Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir blurbed “”Well my reaction is that this is going to start a new arms race in the region. We are aware of these developments are taking place with a view to putting nuclear weapons at sea and this is a very serious issue.” He said the testing of the new missile would have an impact on the entire region.
What arms race he is talking about? India and China, the arch rivals already have entire spectrum of weapons the region can have. So, where is the question of arms race?
Leave the natural rivals apart. None of the immediate Indian neighbors, apart from Pakistan have a problem with it. India does not need a underwater launched missile for aiming at the regional irritant Pakistan. Land/air missiles are enough. A submarine launched missile has more implications to China than Pakistan. Thanks to Chinese proliferation, now Pakistan too sports the entire breadth of missiles and nuclear weapons.
On the contrary, India is only reacting to an arms race imposed over it by Chinese.
