Pakistan should realise that Interference is a built in feature of aid

When the Chinese ambassador came to Islamabad with unconditional aid, he complained about the Chinese traders not being given importance as American business men. Pakistan being a blind ally to China, does not recognize that Chinese intentions with the pitiful aid they give. But Pakistanis resent US interference even if US has doled out hundreds of billions of dollars to Pakistan.

Pakistan would have been one of the poorest countries in the world if US had not bailed it out every time. May be it would have disintegrated. Even today, Pakistan is being bailed out by US.

All in return US has been asking is to curb terrorism which is bad for even Pakistan. US admits its mistake of messing up in past and wants to clean it up.

The conditions might not be of liking for certain quarters of Pakistani establishment, they can say no to US aid and walk off. But, its not so, they expect US to give them money and mind its own business.

When they cannot resist the green dollar and pressure of US interference, Islamabad resorts to cheating. An ungrateful Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s former dictator lectured at Memorial Auditorium that $10 billion which US gave to pakistan was not enough compared to what Afghanistan got. Where as Pakistan was caught red handed cheating US of over invoicing and overcharging.

Fortunately there now lawmakers at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, who are questioning the payments to Pakistan. The lawmakers include democrats.

“You wonder whether the Pakistanis are on the same page as us or they are only there when, in fact, pressure is exerted in their own national interest as well as ours,” New Jersey’s Senator Robert Menendez said. He wanted accountability and benchmarks before signing on the dotted lines.

Republican from Tennessee senator Bob Corker asked “I would like to know how the money would be circulated in Pakistan and will not end in bank accounts in Switzerland.”

Gates once (Feb, 2008) told the senators that U.S. military aid has supported some 90 Pakistani army operations and allows about 100,000 troops to be positioned in Pakistan’s northwest region. “Based on the information available to me, … I think they are (using U.S. funds appropriately). Pakistan has currently deployed just 15000 troops for fighting Taliban.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a House subcommitte in April 2009 that “Changing paradigms and mind-sets is not easy, but I do believe there is an increasing awareness of not just the Pakistani government but the Pakistani people that this insurgency coming closer and closer to major cities does pose such a threat.” compare that with what Army Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples said in Feb 2008 “However, Pakistan recognizes the threat and realizes the need to develop more effective counterinsurgency capabilities to complement their conventional military.” In between, Pakistan has taken $10 billion from US and signed a peace deal with Taliban in SWAT.

There is one question that US must be asking itself is that why are they supporting such ungrateful people? Like China, US can sign peace treaties with Pakistani fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami and ask for better representation of Us businessmen in the Pakistani economy. In addition US can promise the jihadist that they would not send Us troops to Islamic neighborhood and they need not attack American soil.

Let Pakistan crumble in its own folly.

Oh! by the way, now Pakistan after bombing villages and towns indiscriminately is asking for humanitarian aid. A new money making avenue for the Pakistani elites has opened. Unconditional aid, anyone?
