Google wages the first war of Internet Independence
By P. Chacko Joseph | January 13th, 2010 | Category: Opinion and Editorials | 2 commentsOh yes, they will not capitulate again! And, why should they? Even if Obama did it. Even if Indian politicians do it again and again and so does the rest of the world.
I admire Google. It changed the internet. Google took on the IT Goliath’s. But, it capitulated in front of China. Its nothing new. At least it is braver than US DoD which is allegedly always under attack from China. Even after China allegedly stole terabytes of data on US F-35, US Def Sec Robert Gates was found meowing. Its at least braver than Indian politicians and their bureaucratic set up, who would rather take on Indians who raise the China threat, than taking on China.
To quote the Google blog post A new approach to China “We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that “we will carefully monitor conditions in China, including new laws and other restrictions on our services. If we determine that we are unable to achieve the objectives outlined we will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to China.”"
Google never followed that basic principle. The first opportunity it found, it capitulated and has been capitulating since.
Google has delivered its war message.
In the blog Google wrote “We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”
May god bless Google! may Google win this war for America and the world. Let Google show the world what America stands for, even if American government has forgotten about it.
By the way, A passing shot:
A blogger called me up in the morning and said “hear that! Google is only threatening. Had it been a small blogger’s adsense account, Google would have already done it.”
