TN men, Chattisgarh women make winning start at Savio Cup Basketball

Mumbai: The Tamil Nadu men made a strong start to their campaign, defeating formidable Indian Railways 76-47 in a men’s league match of the 8th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Tridhatu Reality India and United Phosphorous Ltd at the Don Bosco School, Matunga on Tuesday.

In the Under-20 Boys category, Mastan YMCA recorded a five-point win over Fr. Agnel, Mohsin Shaikh excelling for the winners with 31 points in their 72-67 victory. This was Fr. Agne’s second consecutive loss, having gone down to Savio Club late on Monday, falling to the skills of twin brothers Luv and Khush Lahankar, who led their team to a 88-70 victory. While Khush top scored with 21 points, Luv complimented his effort with 16 points.

Railways, National champions of 2010, went into a slump with the exodus of some main players and still seem to be in the process of rebuilding their side. Except for old hands Gagandeep Singh and Prakash Mehra, the other players could not make much of an impact against TN, who led throughout the match.

M A Raghuram emerged the top scorer for TN with 20 points, while Amjyot Singh contributed 17. For Railways the bulk of the scoring was
done by Gagandeep (13) and Mishra (11).
