US Air Force WW II ace and test pilot General Chuck Yeager, the first man to fly supersonic has admitted on his facebook page that he flew with Pakistan against India during the Indo – Pak 1971 war for liberation of Bangladesh and US President Richard Nixon had threatened Indira Gandhi with nuclear weapons . Chuck Yeager was posted as an air attache to Pakistan when 1971 hostilities broke out and an Indian Naval pilot (later naval Chief) Arun Prakash destroyed his twin-engined Beechcraft during a daring raid on Chaklala Airbase. Yeager was reportedly incensed and demanded US retaliation.

While there were murmurs that Chuck Yeager flew sorties against Indian pilots during the war, it has been always officially denied. In his autobiography, Chuck claimed “I didn’t get involved in the actual combat because that would’ve been too touchy, but I did fly around and pick up shot-down Indian pilots and take them back to prisoner-of-war camps for questioning. I interviewed them about the equipment they had been flying and the tactics their Soviet advisers taught them to use. I wore a uniform or flying suit all the time, and it was amusing when those Indians saw my name tag and asked, “Are you the Yeager who broke the sound barrier?” They couldn’t believe I was in Pakistan or understand what I was doing there. I told them, “I’m the American Defense Rep here. That’s what I’m doing.”

The latest facebook post he admits “When I was flying with Pakistan in the war with India, Pakistan had F-104s and India had MiG-21s. I told the Pakistanis: Stay away from the MiG-21s. Don’t try to turn with a MiG 21 in an F-104. They didn’t listen and sure enough when the F-104s jumped the MiG-21s and tangled with them, the F-104s got shot down.”

Few Posts down, he writes “Correction: Pakistan would have been invaded except for Nixon told Gandhi he had nuke weapons trained on India and the US would enter the war. I think the Pakistanis, other than the F-104 instance, were some of the best in the world (besides US) – because they got the most flying time each month.”

On being questioned by Armiral Arun Prakash’s claim of shooting down of his Beachcraft, Chuck said “Mostly rumor by an braggart Indian pilot.”

The news of Pervez Musharraf running away from arrest is the subject of cartoons and jokes around the globe. The man who claimed to have returned from exile to Pakistan to save it from (unknown) enemies and boasted that he is not afraid of arrest, bolted moments after the Islamabad High Court cancelled his bail, making him liable for arrest. The SSG ex-commando, Pakistan Army General and dictator was whisked away into a bulletproof black SUV and sped off to a heavily guarded farmhouse.

Musharraf’s return has puzzled many who over look his history of follies. The man was first noticed as a Brigadier General who had planned an attack to capture Siachen Glacier in 1987, which was promptly repulsed. A soldier from Indian Army, Naib Subedar Bana Singh was a better planner than Pervez Mushharaf, carried out a daring daylight raid to a Pakistani post atop a 22,000 foot (6,700 m) peak, and that too after climbing a 457 m (1500 feet) ice cliff face. To honour him, it has been named Bana Post and Bana Singh lives the life of a war hero in Jammu and Kashmir. Musharraf’s second blunder is a widely advertised one, the Kargil War in 1999.

Musharraf has made enemies with almost everyone and relied on backing of Pakistan Army. Even Army appears uncomfortable with his presence in Pakistan.

After Pakistan lost 1971 war with India, Pervez Musharraf was a prisoner of war in India. Along with rest of the 90,000 Pakistani soldiers, he ate Chicken Biryani in India and was repatriated. In 2008, he left for a exile. Will he be thrice lucky?

Stockholm: China is now the 5th largest arms equipment exporter in the world, as per a latest report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Chinese conventional weapons sales increased by 162% between 2003–2007 and 2008–2012, and its share of the volume of international arms exports increased from 2 to 5 per cent. The new line of top five arms equipment exporters for the period 2008–12 is, United States (30 per cent of global arms exports), Russia (26 per cent), Germany (7 per cent), France (6 per cent) and China (5 per cent). Chinese arms sales is driven by Pakistan and recent deals show that China is establishing itself as a significant arms supplier to a growing number of important recipient states.’

However, China’s biggest arms exports, the JF-17 or FC-1 Xiaolong is reportedly a Russian Design, Italian Avionics and Russian RD-33 engine. Similarly, the other high value export, MBT-2000 Tank Or Al-Khalid MBT comes with Ukrainian 6TD-2 1,200 hp diesel engines. Should this not be credited to the respective country of origin?

“Chinese exports are actually mainly their own designs, even if sometimes a bit stolen from Russian designs. For Chinese exports of the JF-17 and other weapons with non-Chinese components, we try to capture the aspect of non-Chinese engines and sensors by including those as exports from the original suppliers (E.g. for the JF-17 to Pakistan, we include the engine as export from Russia – in our registers you’ll find the JF-17 from China and a corresponding record for the engines from Russia; in our trend-indicator values (TIV) volume data the value if the JF-17 does not include the value for the engine – that is included in Russia’s exports to Pakistan. Similar with F-7 aircraft with Italian radars or MBT-2000 tanks with Ukrainian engines),” says Siemon Wezeman, Senior Researcher, Arms Transfers Programme at SIPRI.

The report also states that Chinese have taken UK’s slot among top five arms exporters. However it may not be true in real terms. UK is listed high in the services export.

“As you also can see from data on financial values of arms exports, as given in official reports by different countries, the UK’s exports put is higher than Germany. Partly that is because the UK exports a lot more services than Germany or China (e.g. to the Middle East), so there you’re correct to say China has not passed the UK ‘in real terms’. However, the official data also show that more or less all countries have different definitions on what arms or arms transfers are – you can also see that from reporting to the UN Register of Conventional Arms – making comparisons near impossible. That is one reason why SIPRI uses its TIV measurement system,” adds Siemon Wezeman.

New Delhi: The opposition parties today cornered the Congress led Indian government for going soft on Pakistan’s action of passing resolution in the parliament condemning of Afzal Guru hanging.

The government sensing the mood in the country backed out and has brought out a counter resolution condemning the Pakistani resolution. Lok Sabha speaker moved the resolution stating Pakistan to stop promoting terrorism, stop interfering in Indian Affairs and Kashmir being integral part of India including the portion illegally occupied by Pakistan.

Indian external affairs ministry has also cancelled the upcoming bilateral hockey series against Pakistan. Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra said that it fully backs the decision and Pakistan should understand the feelings of other nations too. Pakistanis were scheduled to play a five-match series in India April 5-15. India was slated to tour Pakistan for the second leg of the series from April 23.

Government has been constantly working against the mood of the nation while dealing with the neighbors. Tamil parliamentarians have accused the government of not listening to Tamilians, a feeling that has gripped India and in being felt by every quarter.

India has also begun suffering diplomatic setbacks, owing to weakness of the government. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his government are accused of in action at home and abroad including Italy, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan.

Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf arrived in Jaipur’ Sanganer airport today on a day long private visit. PM Ashraf, accompanied by his wife, sons and some relatives will visit the shrine of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer in the afternoon to thank Khwaja for his successful tenure as the Prime Minister.

His visit is visibly unwelcome as evident in the public reaction. Even Ajmer Sharif Dargah Diwan, Zainul Abedin Ali Khan, refuses to come out and meet him. “The incident of beheading and brutal killing of Indian soliders was highly condemnable and has hurt Indians. It is not only violation of human rights but is also against the Islamic law,” Khan told media.

Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf in Jaipur

The External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has hosted a lunch in honour of Prime Minister of Pakistan. Salman Kurshid as a law minister in 2012 had dared anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal to dare visit Kurshid’s hometown Farrukhabad.

It appears that only Pakistani nationals can roam all over India without fear. Indian’s cannot even protest at India Gate.

When economy is in lowest point and most poor Indian’s find it difficult to buy decent food, the state exchequer is being lavished on anti-India terrorist harbormasters. May both Salman Kurshid and his valued guest develop stomach ulcers after snatching and eating from the Indian poor.

NASR – the 60KM range nuclear capable NASR test fired by Pakistan This is a very specific response to India’s so called “Cold Start Doctrine” ostensibly conceived in 2004 to send 8 Independent Battle Groups (each an armoured division equivalent) into Pakistan at high speed and quickly. Pakistan has been giving this excuse – the CSD excuse – to develop tactical nukes and delivery mechanism like NASR.

Is NASR MAD?

Mutually Assured Destruction is a cold war term – Nuke deterrence term indicating the balancing of each side against nuclear strikes by the other side. However, NASR, cannot be construed as MAD. In NASR’s case, the spiral of increasing deterrence may lead to increasing probability of an actual nuke use – and looking at current state of Pakistan – the danger has increased manifolds – as non-state actors may get NASR and actually arm and launch it. You never know what Hafiz Saeed types can imagine with what they can get their hands to!

Key Message from Pakistan

Message Pakistan is giving India – “You keep on spending on conventional weapons and bleed your economy. We will sandwich your conventional capability which is not agile and anyway cannot create a tempo quick enough for any real gains – we will sandwich you in the Nukes dimensions with full spectrum capability and keep on poking you in lower end with variety of mechanisms – Kargil, Parliament attack, 26/11, Beheading your soldiers and many more to come.” India’s visible response is to buy and increase conventional weapons – Rafale, all sorts of Helicopters, different types of transport aircraft – artillery guns.

What can Indian “Common Man” learn from Bollywood?

Since our government’s responses are not visible, we can learn from recent Bollywood movies. Two of the recent Bollywood movies by the same director give us some interesting possibilities. In “A Wednesday” – a common man plans and executes killings of terrorists using common communication technologies, media and using the police force. In “Special 26” set of conmen work the system to create fake CBI and Income Tax raids on politicians, businessmen and babus. Let the common Indian citizens start doing “A Wednesday” OR start doing “Special 26″ with the Politicians, businessmen and Bureaucrats – on second thoughts – may be the “Common Man” has to do both “A Wednesday” and ” Special 26″!

The recent focus by Pakistan claiming internal militancy to be number one enemy – and a doctrinal shift away from India may be of importance for Pakistan’s internal consumption. However, what may not be clear even to Pakistan army / ISI/ Controllers of Pakistan is the fact that it may be prudent for Pakistan to have doctrinal focus on China.

Scenario: Pakistan supported, penetrated and engulfed by China – 2017-2022 timeframe

The process of Chinese support to Pakistan is an ongoing process. Since 2010, China has 11000 soldiers in POK. This is close to 2+ Infantry brigades equivalent strength. Chinese are involved in building the Gwadar port – a very strategic conduit to middle-east and of course to Africa as well. Besides, China has been providing arms and ammunition to Pakistan Military forces for many decades now. Chinese are in. They are considered the thick friends by Pakistani Military.

Key factors making the above scenario likely:

USA is a declining superpower. The Obama win in the Presidential elections might have delayed the demise little bit. In 2017, there will be a new US President. Most likely it will be a republican President. US Forces will leave Af-Pak by 2014 creating a sudden military vacuum. This will be filled by Talibans in the most atrocious manner one can imagine. By 2017, Pakistan military will seek more and more support from China as China already is the largest supplier to Pakistan. China will enter, embed itself and bring-in its strategy of changing the population ratio – as clearly implemented in Tibet, systematically. Pakistanis may start learning Chinese by 2017.

China is pursuing Deng’s reforms of 1978. The Deng reforms very clearly articulate the “superpower” phase that China will has entered since the start of this century. A new type of Superpower is the design. To fulfill the Superpower by 2050 dream, will require secure, fast and wide access to Africa because of its natural resources – untapped. Also, China will need access of markets in other part of world. Karakoram highway is already open to China. China will need to build fast goods trains from Karachi, Gwadar and Pasni to Karakoram. It will also require the land transport to be safe and secure. By 2022 China has to achieve that. Their Superpower design is at stake.

Pakistan is failing if not already a failed state. Living under drones 24×7 has made many Pak-Afghan areas border residents anti-US. The people also may be shifting towards Chinese, thinking of China to be their long-term savior. With Pakistan completely under China, it will be very difficult for India to be of consequence in the new “Chinese world”. With India curtailed, China will pursue its world dominance economically and otherwise. If Pakistan does not go to China, it is but a matter of few years that Pakistan will be divided into 3 or 4 independent countries. These countries may fight with each other. This will not allow China to access the sea-routes to the world at large. Deng’s algorithm for China does not allow Pakistan to get away from Chinese hands. China is slowly, steadily and systematically getting ready to do a “Tibet” on Pakistan. However, this time, China is pursuing the mission with great patience.

Impact on India
Pakistan was created as “non-India”. Non-India is an identity that Pakistan would like to preserve. However, that identity is in grave danger from multiple dimensions – the greatest dimension being the China’s superpower quest and design. India needs to fight it out in multiple ways. China taking over Pakistan is order of magnitude more dangerous for us compared to Tibet overtaken by China. Today, Hindus from Pakistan are seeking asylum in India. From 2017 onwards, there will be an influx of Pakistanis Muslims – in India – they would be terrorized by Talibans and then controlled by China – hence they would be forced to run away. Indian culture, language and even mannerisms are similar and Pakistanis will be more than happy to be assimilated in India. However, China, having taken up control of Pakistan, will not stop at that. China will start looking at Arunachal Pradesh and eastern parts of India as well. This will be a very dangerous scenario for India.

Options for India
Assimilate Pakistan in India by force – most readers will laugh at this suggestion. However, this thought has been proposed by press council of India’s Chairman, Mr. Katju. I am not sure about his drivers, however, instead of letting China take over Pakistan just like we allowed in Tibet, uniting Pakistan with India is a rather more promising option. However, the “how” to do it, is the key question. Second, do we have sufficient national willpower to execute this.

Should we join US in China containment? Should we become the new frontline state of US, just like Pakistan became against soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Of course, we may not become, but some element of cooperation with US and rest of the world powers in not letting China get Pak, needs to be carried out. Diplomacy, military power and economic factors need to be analyzed and a holistic response needs to be created.

Do nothing. Let us react to this when it happens. This is a highly unlikely scenario; we will see when it happens. If the reader is from Indian government think tanks, policy makers and executing agencies, I can see their response. However, in this case, waiting for the crisis to happen may not be a correct measure. Remember, India’s very existence may be at stake.

Crisis avoidance is better than disaster management. Crisis leads to disasters. If we can see the crisis, a crisis avoidance blueprint needs to be created and executed. This time disaster will be extremely costly.

The attack on (Retd) Lt Gen KS Brar, who had led the Operation Blue Star against Pakistani backed Sikh Khalistani extremists, in London shows that the West still hosts the Indian extremists of the past. US, UK and Canada along with Pakistan, were the primary backers of extremism in Punjab and Kashmir. What Pakistan passes off as freedom struggle, the West terms it as Human Rights.

British, Canadian and American senators have constituencies that survive on supporting terror in India. Lying low during economic difficulties shows that their votes can come from other slogans too. Will they ever learn?

To be fair, the US government has covered much ground on terror against India. As it strives to convince Pakistan to drop its terror oriented policy, it could do more to convince its allies like UK and Canada to cultivate other leverages world wide. It is hard to believe that efficient intelligence infrastructure built up by the British and the Canadians did not already know the threat to the Indian generals life.

India should also launch effective diplomacy and legal fronts to target the countries which harbour anti-India elements. This is the right time to do it and there is a greater chance that these economically hobbled countries might actually sit up and listen. In addition, India should also start respecting its citizens the same way Western countries do. That is the only way to make others understand the importance of Indian lives. Western senators should be told that they cannot grab votes by spilling Indian blood. Hopefully India brings the attackers of Lt Gen KS Brar to justice.
