Bangalore: Kenyans Alex Oloitiptip and Gladys Cherono ran brave races in contrasting weather conditions to win the overall men’s and women’s titles of the Tata Consultancy World 10K Bangalore 2013, the World’s Premier 10K Run, which concluded at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, here, on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Oloitiptip, not among the pre-race favourites, but with a personal best of 27.52, took pole position early in the race and held off challenges from fellow Kenyan Nicholas Kipkemboi and Ethiopian youngster Brihanu Legese to win in 28.07 minutes. He was followed home by Kipkemboi in 28.12 and Legese in 28.16.

Current World Cross Country champion Japhet Korir, could not live up to pre-race expectations, finishing a disappointing 17th in 29.59, while another fancied Kenyan Moses Masai finished 10th in 29.05

The overall Indian women’s winners of the TCS World 10K Bangalore, 2013 (from left) 2nd runner up O P Jaisha, International Event Ambassador Maria Mutola, 1st runner up Preeja Sreedharan, Face of the Event Puneeth Rajkumar and Winner Sudha Singh.

The women’s race, run in relatively hotter conditions, saw Gladys Cherono winning in 32.03 minutes, 5 seconds outsode the course record of 31.58, set by Yimer Wude in 2010. Gladys was followed home by Ethiopian Guteni Shone in 32.10 and Kenyan Esther Chemtai in 32.14. Kenyan Helah Kiprop failed to defend her title, finishing seventh in 32.26, while course record holder Yimer Wude was 9th in 32.54.

The overall male and female winners took home USD 21,000 each, with the second and third-placed runners winning 15,000 USD and 9,000 USD each respectively.

Suresh K Patel and Sudha Singh emerged winners among the men and women in the Indian category, finishing overall 20th and 14th respectively.

Suresh Patel, employed with ONGC and based in Dehradun, clocked 30.34, way outside the Indian men’s course record of 29.59, and was followed home by V L Dangi in 30.53 and Mohd Yunus in 30.58.

The women’s race was won by the Railways athlete Sudha Singh in a start to finish effort in 35.25, while Preeja Sreedharan, making a comeback after a layoff, took second place in 36.01, followed by O P Jaisha in 36.31. defending champion Monika Athare had to be content with fourth place.

The Nation’s Challenge saw Uttar Pradesh, represented by Sudha Singh, Suresh Patel and Mohd Yunus emerge winners and take home a purse of Rs 4.5 lakhs, followed by Maharashtra and Kerala.

Though the late night showers on Saturday had cooled temperatures a bit, humidity was high and with the male athletes not willing to force the pace, the course record slipped out of reckoning after the 5km mark. It was a tight bunch that went through the 5km mark, with Oloitiptip, Kipkemboi and Legese in the lead group, followed closely by Mike Kigen, Philemon Rono and Tanzanian Dickson Marwa. The three leaders then broke free at around 8km and entered the stadium with just a few strides separating them.

Oloitiptip stepped on the pedal in the final 350 metres to surge ahead and breast the tape for a well deserved win.
Elaborating on his run, Oloitiptip said “It was fantastic win for me. I had faith in my ability and believed that I could win the run. The first 5 kilometers were difficult and the conditions were humid but the fact that I was strong and well prepared in mind and body helped me do well.”

The women’s race too was closely contested with Lucy Kabuu setting the early pace and leading the bunch comprising Gladys Cherono, Guteni Shone and Esther Chamtai. It was after around 9 kms the Kabuu’s pace flagged, allowing Cherono to move ahead and lead Guteni and Esther into the stadium. Gladys had the stronger finish and warded off the other two to win comfortably.

“The run was my first in India and I am glad with my performance. The weather was humid, which made running a little challenging personally. The run was slow initially but became a lot faster later. I am glad that I overcame the odds and came out victorious. I had a small lead when we entered the stadium and decided to move faster and hold on to my position, said Gladys.”

Bangalore: Three-time World Champion and Olympic Champion in Sydney 2000, Maria Mutola, often ranked as the greatest female 800 m runner of all time, has been appointed as the Event Ambassador for the TCS World10K Bangalore 2013. Maria will be in Bangalore in the days leading up to the event and meet and interact with the participants, the media as well as the sponsors and partners of the event.

Event manager Procam had brought in Constantina Dita and Linford Christie as the ambassadors during 2011 and 2012 respectively. David Rudisha, was the event ambassador of the Delhi Half Marathon in 2012, and ‘King’ Haile Gebrselassie was brand ambassador for 2013 Mumbai Marathon.

Maria Mutola’s consistency, her record at major championships and her ability to compete at the highest levels of the sport for well over a decade are unmatched. She is the fourth track & field athlete to compete at six Olympic Games.

Maria Mutola

Maria won the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics in 1997 only weeks after her father had been killed in a car accident. She raced wearing a black ribbon and dedicated the victory to his memory. In total she has won nine world 800 m titles, including both indoor and outdoor championships. She won the Commonwealth Games twice and has also won the IAAF World Cup event, representing the Africa team, four times consecutively.

Maria’s greatest moment, though, came at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, when she finally won Olympic gold. She beat her major rival Stephanie Graf and Kelly Holmes.

She continued her successes in the 2001 season, grabbing the world title in Edmonton and again in 2003 in Paris. Mutola was unbeaten throughout 2003 and grabbed the headlines again that year, at the Memorial van Damme race in Belgium. By winning here, it meant that she became sole winner of the IAAF one million dollar jackpot, awarded to athletes who remained undefeated during the IAAF Golden League series of competitions. She put part of her winnings towards the foundation that she had established in her name in Mozambique.

Aiming to become the first woman to successfully defend the Olympic 800 m title in 2004, her fifth Olympics, Mutola ended up finishing fourth, and out of the medals. In 2005 her injuries were still lingering and she suffered several losses to opponents she would normally easily beat. She parted amicably with her coach Margo Jennings, before returning to good form in 2006, when she won the World Indoor title for a record seventh time.

Mutola had decided that the 2008 Olympic Games would be her last major championships, and she finished fifth. She publicly called an end to her 21-year long athletics career at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting immediately after the Olympics.

After retiring from athletics she returned to her first sporting love, football. She played for Mamelodi Sundowns team in the South African women’s league. In 2011 she was captain of the Mozambique national soccer team at the All-Africa Games in Maputo.

In 2012 she coached South African runner Caster Semenya to a silver medal at the Olympic Games in London.

‘It’s an honour to be invited as Event Ambassador for the TCS World 10K Bangalore, the world’s premier 10K run. India is fast emerging as one of the leading long distance running destinations of the world and I am looking forward to interacting with running enthusiasts in Bangalore. I hope my visit helps in some way to inspire young, budding athletes to work harder and achieve glory,” said Mutola in her message.

Karnataka government’s Forensic Science Laboratory officials said that the pipe bomb was planted on a motorcycle having Tamil Nadu registration.

The blast occurred on the same day as in 2010, when two explosions had rocked Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium injuring 15 people. Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar admitted about an intelligence alert that Bangalore might be targeted on the third anniversary of the Chinnaswamy Stadium blasts, but claimed that the alert was not specific. A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has joined the probe and an FIR has been registered at the Vyalikaval police station.

The bomb failed to cause major casualty as a police van, cars, trees and houses acted as shields. Eyewitnesses claimed that the bike was thrown up several metres after the explosion. Vehicles parked near it caught fire. The injured persons have been admitted in the K C General hospital were treated and discharged yesterday.

A police team in Chennai managed to trace the registered owner of the motorcycle, but the owner’s father said that it was sold four years back as his son had left for US.

Politics has already caught up with the blast. Congress Karnataka emerged as insensitive after it commented that the blast will help BJP in the immediate elections. Prime Minister of India, who had condemned Boston Blast in a jiffy, has failed to comment on the Bangalore blast.

<img src="http://frontierindia.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/V-Rajvirdhan’s-car-catches-fire-in-the-9th-lap-at-the-15th-JK-Tyre-FMSCI-National-Racing-Championship-in-Chennai.-.jpg" alt="V Rajvirdhan’s car catches fire in the 9th lap at the 15th JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship in Chennai.
Another talented driver from Chennai, Saran Vikram, and winner of the second race yesterday kept to his game plan of wanting to finish on podium instead of getting declared ‘DNF’. He took his time at the start allowing Ashwin’s teammate Sarosh Hataria to go past him but only to pass the latter at the second corner. Saran started second and Hataria third on the grid but the former was determined to avoid any incident that would affect his chances of finishing on podium. Sarosh had a duel with young Chennai lad Vishnu Prasad, who tailed him almost through out the race. Sarosh yielded no leeway to Vishnu by always keeping to his inside line. His determination won him the third place on the podium.

With two wins from three races Ashwin Sundar leads the pack on the points table and with four more races to go (two rounds) the remainder of the championship will witness tougher competition from second placed Saran Vikram (Mars Racing) and Rayo Racing’s Sudarshan Rao of Bangalore, who is on 82 points.

The much awaited Indian Touring Cars Class race threw out interesting hot chases for top honours but Coimbatore’s Arjun Balu, the favourite in the category, kept his cool to live up to his billing as the ‘top seed’. There was no difference in the style in which he won the first race yesterday. Starting from pole, Balu brought about a stunning finish for first place.

Balu, with his experience, was in a league of his own; determined to keep ahead from the others with a solid lead right from the beginning. There was greater challenge for second and third place between Arjun Narendran (Coimbatore), N Leelakrishnan (Coimbatore), V. Rajvirdhan (Coimbatore) and Siddharth Kishore( Chennai).

But as the luck would have it, Rajvirdhan, who was looking to finish 2nd, packed up in the eighth lap when his engine blew up perhaps because of a combination of heat and humidity and his eagerness to catch up with Balu. On all counts, it was a creditable show by veteran Leelakrishnan to finish second for the second successive podium finish this weekend with Siddharth Kishore coming third on the podium.

In the Indian Junior Touring Cars event, Chennai based Feroze Khan made it a start to finish affair driving with élan well ahead of his rivals to achieve a creditable double. However, Mumbai’s Fahad Kutty, the leader on the points table, who had packed up his engine yesterday, showed his class with a fourth place finish after starting 22nd on grid.
