Su-35 makes demonstration flight, Russia to buy 70 more Su-34’s till 2015
Russia’s new Su-35 Flanker multirole fighter aircraft completed its first demonstration flight on Monday. In six-minute flight, it performed a number of maneuvers. Chief of Air Force Colonel General Alexander Zelin attended the event. The Su-35 prototype made its maiden flight on February 18.
“We have a large number of orders for this aircraft. Deliveries will be made both for the Russian Air Force and foreign clients… We will start deliveries in 2011,” Chief of Sukhoi, Mikhail Pogosyan said.
“We plan to train two to three regiments to fly the Su-35 aircraft,” Russia’s Air Force commander Alexander Zelin said.
According to him Su-34 fighter aircraft will also be inducted into Russian Air Force. “We are planning to conclude a long-term agreement for five years on the delivery of two Su-34 regiments,” A. Zelin said. Russian Air Force until 2015 plans to buy 70 more planes of Su-34 type.
As per Russians Su-34 aircraft belongs to a generation 4 + and Su-35 belongs to 4++ generation.
“The first flight of Russia’s fifth-generation combat aircraft to be held in 2009″, said Colonel General Alexander Zelin. He said that till 2013, Russian Air force will test the fifth generation aircraft to understand its capabilities and familiarisation. According him, Su-35 is intermediate generation between Su-27 fighter aircrafts and fifth generation aircraft. “This aircraft (SU-35) is created to help polish the all tasks that we must resolve to create the fifth-generation aircraft,” A. Zelin said.
He also said that Mi-28 N helicopter will finish flight tests by August 2008.

Undoubtedly a good decision taken. Could it be a good bet? That is true that some aircraft must match the US 5th generation fighter aircraft. However, will it be worth the cost when the drones have superiority over non-UAV opponents?
