The Terry Fox Run 2012 received an overwhelming response as 10,000 students, from 50-60 schools participated in the run.
DGP, Mr. Subramaniam flagged off the event. Sheriff of Mumbai Indu Sahani, who was also present at the event, extended her support whole heartedly.
Judith Fox-Alder, sister of Terry Fox says she marvels at how much the annual run has been able to do for cancer research, and how much it continues to do. The Run in India is now the second biggest Run in the world! “We hope this year we’ll make it to the top”, says Mr. Kripalani.
“We have 34 countries that are doing Terry Fox runs now,” said Fox-Alder, “It’s quite amazing that Terry 30 years ago did his Marathon of Hope and captured a nation, and now he has captured the hearts of people all over the world. It is hard to describe what it means to be Terry Fox’s sister. I don’t even think we can explain the pride that we feel. Terry was an extraordinary person, and the fact that we were born into this family is just a miracle in itself.”
Born in Canada, Terry Fox was an active teenager involved in many sports. He was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with
osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated above the knee. While in hospital, he witnessed the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children. This made him decide to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the Marathon of Hope.
He died soon after but an annual event came into existence to commemorate his efforts known as The Terry Fox Run. Each year, thousand ds of volunteers organize Terry Fox Run events in Canada and around the world.
The Run is a non-competitive event where people get together as individuals, families and groups to raise money in Terry Fox’s name. It is a day of celebrating Terry’s legacy and helping to keep his dream of a cure for cancer alive. In India, the main partners over the years have been M. K. Tata Trust, Allanasons, Frigorifico Allana Ltd, and Birla Sunlife, Aditya Birla Group, Hotel Leela Venture Ltd, MF Globalsify Securities, India Private Ltd, Cambay Tiger, Roche Products and several more for the run.
