By (FINN) Frontier India News Network | February 2nd, 2012 | No Comments »New Delhi: The Supreme Court today refused to direct CBI to probe the alleged role of Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case. The apex court also canceled the grant of 2G licenses. The Supreme Court was ruling on the petitions seeking a direction for a probe into the alleged role of Chidambaram in 2G spectrum scam and for cancellation of 122 radiowave licences granted during the tenure of A Raja as Telecom Minister. No Special Investigations team can probe the 2G scam ruled the court. The petitions on both the issues were filed by NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), Civil Society member Prashant Bhushan and Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy.
The unanimous verdicts on all three of the petitions was pronounced by Justice Singhvi. Justice Ganguly is retiring on Thursday, he will be sitting in a bench headed by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia.
Speaking to the press outside the court, a smiling Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy said “There is a 4 months period for getting into new contract. Unitech and Swan licensees will be confiscated and profits will be used for legal aid and ex servicemen.” He said that the SIT won’t be investigating and CVC will look after the investigations.”
On Chidambaram, he said that he was happy with the judgement. He said he would have been unhappy if the SC had ruled that there is no case against Chidambaram. The trial court is heading the 2G case and CBI although is free to run investigations under Chidambaram, but, this time under the Trial courts observations.
Swamy lashed at the government by saying that it is “a collective failure by handing out licenses in an illegal manner. The Govt didn’t find it important to call a cabinet meeting to look into the matter.”
