A shocked Supreme Court (SC) today observed that the midnight police action to evict yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his followers from Ramlila grounds was a gross violation of human rights. SC has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner
and Delhi Government’s Chief Secretary to explain within two weeks what was the compulsion to act against the sleeping followers of Ramdev at midnight.
The notices were issued by a vacation bench comprising Justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar. Justices Chauhan and Kumar said, “We are shocked at the brutality of police action after seeing media reports on TV channels. What was the compulsion to evict the sleeping agitators at 0130 hrs at night?”
The police crackdown was carried out by around 5000 jawans of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force who had descended on Ramlila Ground at New Delhi on Saturday night.
The apex court refused a petition filed by Ajay Aggrawal but took suo motu notice on the basis of media reports and issued showcause notices to three officers. Ajay Aggrawal had made Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Parliamentry Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay as respondents.
