Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna face 2 year Davis cup suspension

New Delhi: The All India Tennis Federation has extended the suspension of ace players Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for two years to play in Davis Cup. The two are punished because of their refusal to play with Leander Paes during the 2012 London Olympic Games in London.

Earlier, AITA had said that it would stick to the young Indian side for the Asia-Oceania Group-I Davis Cup, which was underway in Chandigarh, and will not include Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the squad until the country moves up from the Asia-Oceania Group.

AITA is taking the tough decision of banning them till 30 June 2014 after the good performance of the young Indian Davis Cup team. The younger team includes Yuki Bhambri, Vishnu Vardhan, SP Misra, Sanam Singh and Divij Sharan.

However, AITA secretary general Bharat Oza said the two players could be considered for the next Asian Games.

Mahesh Bhupathi had refused to team up with Leander Paes due to personal and professional spat. But Rohan Bopanna, who was asked to team up with Paes wrote to AITA that he and Bhupati had trained together and he had just 2 game experience with Paes.
