INS Sindhuvijay modernised with Indian Equipment

INS Sindhuvijay was handed over to Indian Navy during a ceremonyheld on May 8 at the shipyard” Zvyozdochka” in Severodvinsk.
As per the tradition Russian tradition a bottle of champagne was opened and the Indian tradition of coconut breaking was carried out.
Speaking at the ceremony, Indian Embassy representative said that India looks forward to further cooperation with Zvyozdochka for the modernization of submarines.
The Zvezdochka spokeswoman Elena Korostel said that “it is already the fourth submarine, upgraded for the Navy India. Now INS Sindhuvijay is awaiting floating, mooring and running tests in the sea.”
INS Sindhuvijay had arrived to Severodvinsk in 2006 for the upgrades.
INS Sindhuvijay has is a large number of systems and equipment developed and manufactured in India. These include acoustic set USHUS (Sonar) and radio communication system CCS-MK. The submarine has been also equipped with a Russian missile complex Klub-S. Klub-S is designed to defeat surface ships and ground targets at a distance of about 200 km.
INS Sindhuvijay is built on the Admiralty shipyards in Saint Petersburg and is serving Indian Navy since 1990. The design 877 EKM submarine (”kilo” as per classification OF NATO) is developed in Rubin based in Saint Petersburg. Kilo class submarines are intended for dealing with submarines, ships, sea bases, coastal & sea communications, reconnaissance and patrol. The submarine has a displacement in 2,300 tonnes, length - 72.6 m, submerged speed of 17 knots, diving depth of 300 meters. The crew composes of 52 sailors, and a self sustained navigation of 45 days. The weapons are six 533 mm torpedoes .
