Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India has been dubbed underachiever, both at home and abroad. However, PM seems to be on an ever fast track mode. Yesterday he decided to fast track project clearences for Oil & gas projects. A search for PM’s office press releases shows that PM has fast tracks on business, transport, judicial and other issues. Whatever PM does is fast track and they are so fast, that no one seems to notice or feel it.
In June 2008, addressing the annual general meeting of industry chamber Assocham, the PM said that Indian tortoise will win the global race. “The steady acceleration of growth, from an average of 3.5 per cent in 1950 to 1980, 5.5 per cent in 1980 to 2000, and to nearly 9 per cent since 2004, bears testimony to the wisdom of the saying that slow and steady wins the race! The Indian tortoise will win the race against many Asian hares,” he has been quoted as saying.
Known for his calm demeanour, Singh does bring in stability to the volatile coalition politics, by absorbing all the insults and tantrums. His necessity for Congress may be vital, for nation it is debatable.
Manmohan Singh’s contribution as finance minister during the tenure of Father of Modern India, PV Narasimha Rao, is worth in gold. His tenure as a Prime Minister has been already summed up in the Time Magazine cover.
Will the PM actually fast track his current promises and if he cannot, will fast track his exit is to be seen.
