Here is statistics for Indian government which belches against social networking sites for its woes. As per comScore Media Metrix released today, every one in four online minutes are spent on social networking sites by Indians. As per the report, 95% used Google and 25.2% used social networking while online. 57.8 million people of age 15 and above access the Internet from a home or work computer. Facebook has 83.4% users but users spend 244.4 minutes compared to 155.3 of Google.
For government, there is another lesson. Its NIC.in domains have 21.8 percent reach, with 13,308,000 users and an average 23.6 minutes are spent on it.
Top 5 usage of internet are social networking, entertainment, portals, emails and search.
These are interesting statistics for the government to engage the online community and not abhor the nearly 58 million people. The Kapil Sibal, Lalu Prasad and P Chidambaram types should understand that this is a big constituency which the government fails to engage. The other point is that if these 58 million are cussing government, then consider it as a massive online protest, as venues are shifting in the digital age. This population forms the governments much abhorred urban middle class.
