India, Japan and China pact to share data on efficient use of Navy in IOR

New Delhi: India, Japan and China have signed and entered into a pact to share data to achieve most efficient use of Naval Forces present in the Indian Ocean Region to fight piracy.

The initiative is known as Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE). Talking to press in New Delhi, Naval spokesperson Admiral Monty Khanna said that the initiative began functioning from first of last month.

Practiced by other navies in the region, the SHADE meetings provide a working-level opportunity for navies to come together to share information and deconflict counterpiracy efforts off the coast of Somalia. The SHADE initiative was introduced in 2008 and currently includes military and civilian representatives from 27 countries, 14 international organizations, the maritime industry and several governments have joined the meetings. The meets are held in Bahrain.

China, India, and Japan have also agreed to carry out more effective coordination by establishing a convoy coordination working group as part of the Shared Awareness and Deconfliction Mechanism.
