India to get deliveries of 80 Russian Mi-17V-5 military helicopters from March 2011

Indian Air Force will see the deliveries of 80 Russian Mi-17V-5 military transport helicopters and spare parts. Russia will begin deliveries March 2011 onwards. The value of the contract is expected to exceed $1.345 billion. The contract between the Indian Foreign Ministry and Russia’s Rosoboronexport state arms exporter was signed in December 2008.

India already uses Mi-17 helicopters. This supply will replace some of the existing Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Meanwhile, India has tendered for upgradation of the existing fleet of the Mi-17 helicopters in service. Five companies have been sent this tender worth a $100 million. The upgrade will incorporate State-of-the-art LCD screens, touch screens and other equipment. The upgrade will help the pilot to concentrate on flying and less work inside cockpit.
