DCNS to start Indian operations in 2008
In a few months’ time, DCNS plans to set up an Indian subsidiary. As per DCNS, the main aims are to contribute to the success of the current contracts for Scorpene submarines and P28 propulsion systems and to expand business relations with local suppliers.
The Indian Navy signed a contract for the acquisition of six Scorpene to be wholly built in India by Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL). DCNS, the Scorpene industrial prime contractor manages the technology transfer, provides services and supplies equipment as stipulated in the contract. The first cut for the first submarine took place at Mazagon Dock Limited’s Mumbai shipyard in December 2006. The first boat is scheduled for delivery in 2012 with the other five to follow at a rate of one per year.
Indian naval shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has awarded DCNS a contract to supply propulsion equipment and auxiliaries, including thrust blocks, for four type P28 anti-submarine warfare corvettes for the Indian Navy. The contract is led by a partnership comprising DCNS and Indian company Walchandnagar Industries Ltd. (WIL). DCNS also assists GRSE with propulsion system integration.
