Chinese-origin ship docked in Angola in May, and at that time Angola stated publicly its refusal to allow the unloading of arms that were destined for use by the Zimbabwean Defense Force. The ship has since departed. According to public statements made by a People’s Republic of China spokesperson, the arms shipment is returning to China without being delivered to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean government had confirmed that 77 tons of 3-million rounds of AK-47 assault rifle ammunition, 3000 mortar rounds and 1500 rocket-propelled grenades – ordered from the Chinese government was arriving by the Chinese ship ‘An Yue Jiang’.
Britain, US, trade unions and civil society groups saw to that the ship cargo was not unloaded for weeks.
China is under fire in the lead-up to the Olympics for its support of human rights atrocities in Sudan, Tibet, and Burma.
