The United States government awarded Lockheed Martin an Undefinitized Contract Authorization (UCA) for the production of 24 Advanced F-16 Block 52 aircraft for Morocco, making the Kingdom of Morocco the 25th nation to select the F-16.
Morocco will acquire a Block 52 configuration of the F-16C/D aircraft tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF). The sale will include the aircraft, mission equipment and a support package. The new aircraft will supplement the RMAF’s existing fleet of fighter aircraft and will contribute to the upgrade and modernization of the RMAF.

Chinese-origin ship docked in Angola in May, and at that time Angola stated publicly its refusal to allow the unloading of arms that were destined for use by the Zimbabwean Defense Force. The ship has since departed. According to public statements made by a People’s Republic of China spokesperson, the arms shipment is returning to China without being delivered to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean government had confirmed that 77 tons of 3-million rounds of AK-47 assault rifle ammunition, 3000 mortar rounds and 1500 rocket-propelled grenades - ordered from the Chinese government was arriving by the Chinese ship ‘An Yue Jiang’.

As part of its 1999 Strategic Defence Procurement, South Africa ordered 26 modern Gripen fighters for its front-line air defence and fighter requirement. The new multiple capability aircraft are replacing the SAAF’s fleet of Cheetah aircraft. South Africa will receive 26 Gripen new generation fighters – 9 dual-seat and 17 single-seat.
Delivery of the first Gripen follows an extensive two-year flight test programme in South Africa to integrate local avionics, defence and combat systems. Initial work was conducted in Sweden before migrating to a dedicated Gripen Flight Test Centre established at the SAAF’s Test Flight Development Centre near Bredasdorp in the Southern Cape.

The government in Niger recently ordered Diamond Aircraft 42 Multi-Purpose Platforms (MPP) for border surveillance missions to inhibit smuggling and to protect critical infrastructures. The aircraft are equipped with Denel/Zeiss Goshawk cameras incorporating multiple sensors for daylight surveillance and nighttime observation using thermal sensors and a laser range finder.

On 1 April 2008 Thales Nederland was awarded a contract for the supply of integrated sensor, command & control and communication systems for three new multi-mission frigates for the Moroccan Navy.
Prime Contractor is Schelde Naval Shipbuilding who will build the multi-misson frigates. In 2012 the last of the three ships will be delivered.

South Africa has successfully completed comprehensive troop trials with the MILAN ADT (ADvanced Technologies) firing post, developed and produced by MBDA Deutschland/LFK. This was the first operational evaluation of the new, fully digitised MILAN ADT firing post.
In the final firing campaign with the ADT firing post, a total of ten shots were fired. The MILAN ADT firing post and the MILAN 3 missile operated perfectly. The shots were fired at stationary and mobile targets at various ranges by South African forces who had been trained shortly before.

MBDA has delivered the first series production batch of the new fully digitised MILAN ADT (ADvanced Technologies) firing post to South Africa. In addition to this latest generation firing post, developed and produced by MBDA Deutschland/LFK in Germany, the delivery also included MILAN 3 munitions and a training simulator. Troop trials with the system by the customer are already under way.
During acceptance of the firing posts at the MBDA Deutschland/LFK site at Schrobenhausen in December 2007, the customer checked and confirmed the functionality of five units. In addition, the maintenance equipment, initial spares package and logistic and maintenance systems for product support were demonstrated and also received customer acceptance.

On January 30, 2008 the South African Navy took over command of “SAS Queen Modjadji”, the third and last of three Class 209/1400mod sub¬marines. The delivery of the three submarines was part of a large-scale programme to modernise the South African Navy. The boat was handed over after the successful completion of all necessary sea trials at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) in Kiel, a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
The “SAS Queen Modjadji” is expected to leave for South Africa on April 2, where she is due to arrive on May 22. The official commissioning ceremony will take place at a later date, still to be defined, after the submarine has arrived in her new home port of Simon’s Town in South Africa. There the submarine will be united with her two sister ships, “SAS Manthatisi” and “SAS Charlotte Maxeke”, which have already been successfully performing in the service of the South African Navy since September 2005 and November 2006 respectively.

The new joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Sudan’s strife-torn Darfur region (UNAMID) was on high alert today after one of its supply convoys was ambushed last night in an area that has seen violent clashes between the Government and rebels.
UNAMID did not return fire, and no casualties were incurred, during the attack on the re-supply mission between Um Baru, Tine and Kulbus in West Darfur, an area where the force’s air operations have been restricted due to the security concerns.

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has released its latest report on sexual exploitation and abuse which reveals a decrease in the number of allegations against its own staff in the last half of 2007 as compared to the same period in 2006.
Only two allegations involving UNMIL personnel were reported from July to December 2007, the period covered by the latest report – which is part of UNMIL’s efforts to implement the Organization’s policy of keeping the public informed about measures taken to eradicate any incidents of such abuse by UN personnel. There were nine incidents reported during the same period in 2006.

The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), set to become the world body’s largest peacekeeping operation with some 26,000 personnel at full strength, is poised to officially take over on Monday from the AU force currently on the ground trying to quell the violence and suffering in the war-wracked region of western Sudan.
More than 200,000 people have been killed and another 2.2 million forced to flee their homes, living either as internally displaced persons (IDPs) or as refugees in neighbouring Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR). UN officials have described Darfur as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
