Lockheed Martin Corporation has delivered the Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-16I Flight and System Trainer (FST) that will be used to support a variety of training requirements for the IAF F-16I “Soufa” fighter and ground attack aircraft. Delivery of the simulator is part of a contract originally awarded in January 2006 that calls for Lockheed Martin Simulation, Training & Support (STS) to provide emergency procedures, aircraft systems operation, and tactical and weapon systems crew training.
Lockheed Martin provides the hardware and software to simulate F-16I aircraft systems, sensors, weapons and flight dynamics. The training system foundation is built from Lockheed Martin’s NxSys pre-integrated suite of simulation products. That suite includes the Instructor Operator Station (NxIOS), Flight Debrief Station for After Action Review (NxAAR), Tactical Environment Simulation (NxTES), Digital Radar Landmass Simulation (NxDRLMS) Air-to-Ground and Terrain Following (TF) radar, and NxView Sensor Image Generator Software for Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN(TM)) forward-looking mid-wave infrared (FLIR).

The Boeing Company has signed a commercial contract with the government of Germany for the production of Laser Joint Direct Attack Munitions (LJDAM) and integration support on Tornado aircraft, marking the first international sale of the LJDAM weapon system. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
LJDAM consists of the standard JDAM guidance tailkit and a Precision Laser Guidance Set (PLGS) kit that acquires and tracks laser target signals. The weapon is designed to accurately and effectively engage both stationary and fast-moving targets. The tailkit and laser guidance set are attached in the field to convert 500-pound bombs into precision laser-guided munitions.

A joint-agency search continues for missing crew members following Monday’s crash of a B-52H Stratofortress bomber 25 miles off the northwest coast of Guam. Bodies of two of the six Airmen on board the aircraft have been recovered. Identities of the crew members are being withheld pending family notification.
On scene in a 900-square mile search area are crews with two U.S. Coast Guard vessels and the USS John McCain, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer.

The General Delegation for Armaments (DGA) has delivered on July 16 the first Caesar cannon artillery (truck equipped with an artillery system) serially produced for the French Army. Seven additional guns will be delivered before the end of 2008. The contract for CAESAR was notified in December 2004 to Nexter Systems, for development, acquisition and support of 77 guns with deliveries spread until 2011.

AgustaWestland signed a contract to supply 18 AW139 medium twin helicopters to the Qatar Armed
Forces. These aircraft will be operated by the Qatar Emiri Air Force supporting various Government
Agencies to perform several roles including utility, troop transport, search and rescue, border patrol,
special forces operations, law enforcement and homeland security duties. The contract value is about
260 million Euro and includes crews training and initial spares package.
This contract marks the continued success of the AW139 in the Middle East market with over 100
units purchased in the region. This order increases the sales total to more than 370 helicopters
ordered by over 100 customers in nearly 40 countries.

Boeing and the government of Qatar signed an agreement on July 21 for the purchase of the C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to provide new strategic-airlift mobility capabilities for the Qatar Armed Forces (QAF). Qatar will sign a Foreign Military Sales agreement for contractor logistics support with the U.S. Air Force. Boeing will begin deliveries from its Long Beach, Calif., C-17 factory, in summer 2009.
“The QAF is very pleased to be acquiring C-17s,” said H.E. Maj. Gen. Hamad bin Ali Al-Attiyah, chief of staff, Qatar Armed Forces. “The C-17 Globemaster III is a world-class strategic and tactical airlifter that has proven itself repeatedly around the world. This agreement marks a new era in Qatar’s ability to provide strategic airlift in support of our military and humanitarian operations.”

Lieutenant General Henry A. “Trey” Obering, Missile Defense Agency director, announced the successful execution of an important system test today during which a long-range ballistic missile was tracked by radars of the missile defense system.
The threat-representative target, which was accompanied by countermeasures, was launched from the Kodiak Launch Complex, Alaska, at 1:47 p.m. Alaska Time (5:47 p.m. EDT). The target was acquired and tracked by several space, ground and sea-based sensors which provided data to the missile defense system’s Command, Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) system, and also to the Ground-based Midcourse Defense fire control system in Colorado Springs, Colo. to support a simulated interceptor missile engagement.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected to provide its laser-based Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures Systems (LAIRCM) for the U.K. Royal Air Force’s (RAF) air-to-air refueling and transport aircraft.
Under the terms of the $93 million contract, Northrop Grumman’s Defensive Systems Division will provide LAIRCM system hardware and support for the U.K.’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft program (FSTA) to Thales U.K., a member of the AirTanker consortium.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has begun production of the fuselage section for the first F/A-18F Super Hornet for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Mechanics loaded the aircraft’s first bulkhead components into place July 10 on Northrop Grumman’s state-of-the-art F/A-18 assembly line in El Segundo. The government of Australia is purchasing 24 F/A-18Fs from the United States in the first international procurement of the Super Hornet. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is already in service with the U.S. Navy as its combat-proven strike fighter.
As principal subcontractor to The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman is responsible for design and production of the F/A-18E/F’s center/aft fuselage section and twin vertical tails, integration of all associated subsystems and after-delivery product support. (The “E” model has one cockpit seat; the “F” has two.) Northrop Grumman has delivered more than 1,800 of these fuselage “shipsets.”

The US Navy announcedon 15th July that the next two Virginia-class attack submarines will be named the USS Minnesota and the USS North Dakota.
The selection of Minnesota, designated SSN 783, honors the state’s citizens and their continued support to our nation’s military. Minnesota has a long tradition of honoring its veterans of wars past and present. The state is proud to be home to 46 Medal of Honor recipients that span from the Civil War to the Vietnam War.

A new approach to purchasing the UK armed forces’ complex weapons took a step forward on 15th July, with the launch of an Assessment Phase for Team Complex Weapons (Team CW), an innovative partnership between the Ministry of Defence, MBDA (UK), Thales UK, QinetiQ and Roxel UK Ltd.
The Teaming Agreement, signed by all Team CW members, creates the environment necessary to develop a partnering approach to the planning and delivery of a long term strategy for the Complex Weapons sector in the UK. The Assessment Phase of the Team CW Programme will assess this radically new approach to develop and produce the UK’s military requirements for the next generation of missiles and guided weapons for the armed forces.
