Five hundred Arjun Tank orders needed for project break even

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 |

Unfazed by tantrums thrown by certain Indian Army officials, Indian defence establishment is looking forward minimum orders for 500 Arjun Tanks for project break even. Since the recent Summer trials were successful with DRDO outsmarting elements in Indian Army by placing a black box inside the tank to evade sabotage. The winter trials showed that the rest of the Indian Defence Establishment not agreeing with the Army reports on the Arjun Tanks.

The Accelerated User Cum Reliability Test (AUCRT) of Indian Army’s preparedness with Arjun tank is already over. On the tank’s part, the DRDO ensured the text book performance. The Arjun Tank performed in the searing heat of Rajasthan sands. The transmission gear which created a temporary hitch the winter trials, performed smoothly.

The trials are for checking the Indian Army’s preparation for inducting Arjun Tank and not judging the tank itself. However, the Indian Army projects that it’s more of Arjun Tank evaluation and not about Army’s preparedness.

Human Rights in the Context of Sub-conventional Warfare in India

Monday, May 26th, 2008 |

Some sections of the media usually make much of West-askewed new fangled fads like animal rights, ecology, gay activism and what have you. The painful part is that, celebrity status prominent Indians too, are in the forefront in these matters; Mmes Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy, Maneka Gandhi; Bahuguna, and Kaw to name just a few. Do these chaps really understand what they are mouthing? I doubt it. At least the environmentalists should also realize, that, hurdles in development in the name of rights of a few rustic land owners or on ecological concerns will only harm the poor in India in the longer run. Human-kind is superior and has priority over any dead dodo, exotic tropical fowl, bird-dog or jackal or jackass.

The Assam Rifles- Sentinels of the East

Friday, May 16th, 2008 |

Assam Rifles LogoThe protests and rallies by Tibetan Budhist monks in Lhasa & its high-handed smothering and quelling by the Chinese Police and the PLA, takes one back to similar alarming happenings four to five decades ago. Also, reminds one of the day in 1959, when forward elements of The Assam Rifles, deployed on the Indo-Tibetan Border, received His Holiness, The Dalai Lama and his entourage fleeing into India, and ensured its safe passage up to Misamari, in the foot-hills of the then ( North East Frontier Agency) NEFA…. The Dalai Lama, is now safely ensconced in Mcleodgunj, Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India. For once, he is showing pique and ire. He is at one with the angst-driven and seething Tibetan youth, who have been hogging the TV screens & internet sites, in a spate of demonstrations all over the world. (more…)

An Army under siege

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 |

As time has gone by, the quality of the leadership has deteriorated. It has become a 1 million plus army and it does not has the culture to make its own weapons and fight. The kargil War showed the will of the young Indian soldiers to fight and win a war, the war has exposed to the paralysis of the Indian Army (IA) leadership. The Army General had to be criticised to come back from his arms shopping trip. Estimated 700,000 Indian Army personnel deployed in mountainous Kashmir and they did not have high altitude clothing.

Indian Army leadership has taken up complaining about anything and anything around it when it comes to indigenisation of critical arms and equipment. Paid F-16’s for India

Monday, April 28th, 2008 |

It has been enemy plane number one for India, it is configured to carry nuclear weapons against India and now India has to pay for this old plane in new avatar. US fighter jet producer Lockheed Martin today submitted its bid for Indian Air Force’s mega deal for induction of 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA), claiming its F-16IN would exceed India’s expectations. F-16 has been the mainstay of Pakistan Air Force for more than two decades and is usually offered free to Pakistan.

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company President Ralph D Heath was asked about the advanced technologies being offered to IAF as the F-16s form part of the Pakistan Air Force fighter fleet too. Indian Army’s claims over Arjun Tank was expected

Thursday, April 17th, 2008 |

Indian Army has a new claim against the Arjun Tank. It claims that the engine of the Arjun Tank has failed four times. Before I get into the details further, its necessary that the background of this new claim has to be told.

Last year, Combat Vehicle Research Development Establishment (CVRDE, a unit of Defence Research and Development Organisation) was ready for a comparative trial between Indian Army’s imported T-90S and the license produced T-72 versus the home grown Arjun Tank as asked by army. The Indian Army officials realizing that the national media is scrutinizing the tanks performance, pulled out of the trials and went for a “accelerated usage cum reliability trial” (AUCRT).

The South Ossetian Conflict

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 |

South Ossetia is a mountainous region in Georgia. North Ossetia falls in Russia. South Ossetian ethnics speak a language remotely related to Farsi and the Georgians population in the area is less than one-third of the area population. Traditionally, the Ossetians have had good relations with Russians.

The current armed conflict between South Ossetia and Georgia can be traced to 1920, when South Ossetian’s attempted to declare independence from Georgia as a Soviet Republic. Following the 1921 Soviet invasion of Georgia, the Soviet Government declared South Ossetia to be an autonomous oblast within Georgia in April 1922.

Soviets granted South Ossetians a certain degree of autonomy over matters of language and education in their territory. Meanwhile the nationalist groups in Georgia were beginning to accumulate support, leading to renewed South Ossetian-Georgian tensions.
