US and Japan are set to launch of a pilot project under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Megaports Initiative at the Minami Honmoku Terminal of the Port of Yokohama in Japan. This is to increase individual and joint efforts to detect, deter and interdict illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive material, including terrorist attempts to disrupt global trade and to abuse commercial shipping to further terrorist schemes.
Megaports Initiative aims to monitor cargo containers for nuclear and other radioactive material at the Minami Honmoku Terminal of the Port of Yokohama by installing radioactive materials detection equipment.

Rolls-Royce today formally opened its marine service facility in Mumbai to support the growing shipping industry in India. The inauguration ceremony graced by the traditional Hindu ceremony of “lighting of the lamp” was attended by ship owners and other customers.
Located at Navi Mumbai, the new facility, which employs 60 people, will offer comprehensive support services and undertake repair and upgrading of Rolls-Royce products in the region.

Mechanics at The Boeing Company began final assembly work on the first 777 Freighter at the company’s Everett, Wash., facility this week. The new cargo airplane will roll out of the factory later this month, and work will begin to prepare the airplane for flight test this summer.
The 777 Freighter will fly farther and provide more capacity than any other twin-engine cargo airplane. Boeing will deliver the first 777 Freighter to its launch customer Air France in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The 777 Freighter is based on the 777-200LR Worldliner passenger airplane and is built using the same production line as all other models of the 777. Eleven customers around the world have ordered 78 777 Freighters.

Finding Sydney Foundation search begins to locate the missing Royal Australian Navy cruiser HMAS Sydney II. HMAS Sydney II was lost in November 1941 in the Indian Ocean off Western Australia with its entire crew of 645, following a fierce engagement with the German raider Kormoran.
The SV Geosounder, with renowned shipwreck investigator Mr David Mearns, is due to depart today from the port of Geraldton, Western Australia, to begin the search.

The head of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) has given his backing to a new campaign to raise the awareness of seafarers of their rights to fair treatment in the case of accidents at sea.
The campaign is spearheaded by the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to promote guidelines on the issue developed by the IMO and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

After mismanaging the Indian Aircraft carrier project, Sevmash shipyard has done it again with a Norwegian company “Odfjell.” In 2004 Odfjell placed contracts with the Russian “Sevmash” shipyard, for up to twelve 45,000 tdw IMO type II coated product/chemical carriers. The initial fixed total contract price for all twelve vessels was approximately USD 500 million, later increased to USD 544 mill.
Following serious delays in the construction process, combined with demands for further price increases from the Yard, continuous cooperation problems as well as protracted negotiations, Odfjell decided today to serve formal notice of cancellation to Sevmash. The instalments already paid are covered by standard refund guarantees from international banks. Odfjell will further claim full compensation for its costs and losses caused, on account of wilful misconduct and massive contract breaches by the Yard.

Kongsberg Maritime Simulation & Training and Maersk Supply Service, a leading player in the support vessel industry have entered into an agreement to further develop the existing cooperation in simulator development between the two companies.
The focus of the agreement will be the development of a unique anchor handling simulator, which will utilise the technology and experience the two companies have gained over ten years of collaboration in the field of marine simulation.

The United Nations-supported polar research boat Tara has broken free from the Arctic ice sheet after a record-breaking scientific expedition of over 500 days drifting across the top of the world to gauge the impact of global warming and pollution.
“My congratulations go out to the whole Tara team on their tremendous human and logistical achievement,” UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner said today of Tara Expeditions and the Arctic Drift project, Tara Arctic 2007-2008.

On 9th January, at Ancona shipyard there was the ceremony to mark the cutting of the first sheeting of the new super-luxury cruise ship which Fincantieri is building for the Italian owner SilverSea. The event marks the official commencement of construction work.
Present at the ceremony representing the owner was the Chairman, Manfredi Lefebvre, and the President, Amerigo Perasso. Fincantieri was represented by the Director of the shipyard Mauro Leboffe and the General Manager Merchant Ships, Enrico Buschi.
SilverSea is one of the leading operators in the super-luxury cruise business sector and currently boasts a fleet of five ships.

The Moorings new Beneteau 40 operated as a Moorings 41.3 in its world wide charter fleets won Best Midsize Cruiser in Cruising Worlds 2008 Boat of the Year Contest. The yacht was described by Cruising World “as comfortable and stylish below decks and well organized topsides.” It was praised for having good light-air performance and showed it was designed to
handle equally well in stiffer winds. The 41.3 is one of The Moorings newest midsize monohulls that are based upon the Beneteau Oceanis line of yachts built for comfort as well as performance.
The Moorings version of the yacht is available as a three cabin and two head model offering a forward cabin with ensuite head/shower and two aft cabins with a spacious head and separate shower arrangement. The modern interior features rich mahogany woodwork accented by off-white upholstery and panels throughout the saloon, creating a very warm and comfortable
