Airbus Announces Orders Worth Over US$ 40 Billion At Farnborough Airshow

Airbus announced transactions covering 256 aircraft, valued at US$ 40.5 billion at the 2008 Farnborough Air Show. These transactions include firm orders for 247 aircraft and nine commitments. This also reflects a strong aerospace market despite the global economic uncertainties.

The highlights of the show were two large orders from Middle Eastern carriers. DAE Capital, the aircraft leasing and finance division of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) placed a 100 aircraft order valued at $12.6 billion, comprising the purchase of 30 Airbus A350-900 and 70 Airbus A320 aircraft. Meanwhile Etihad announced a 55 aircraft order comprising an additional 10 A380s, 20 A320s, and 25 A350 XWBs.

India approves six GSLV operational flights

India today gave its approval for funding of six GSLV operational flights (F11 to F16) at a total estimated cost of Rs. 1280.96 crores with a Foreign Exchange component of Rs. 272.90 crores. With the realization of six GSLV Operational flights ( 9F11 to F16 ) end-to-end capability to launch communication satellites will be available during the Eleventh Five Year Plan. The six flights (GSLV F11 –16) are expected to be realized during the time-frame 2010-1012.

GSLV after successfully completing the two demonstration flights attained the operational status during 2004. In its first operational flight, GSLV-F01 successfully launched 1950 kg EDUSAT satellite into Geo-synchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). More recently, during September 2007, GSLV in its F04 flight successfully carried a 2130 kg communication satellite, INSAT-4CR. GSLV in its operational series has so far completed three flights, of which two have been successful.

BAE Systems JETEYE takes flight

BAE Systems’ JETEYE™ infrared missile defense system has completed its first flight on a scheduled American Airlines aircraft flying from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport.

This begins the final phase of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program to test the suitability of missile protection equipment for commercial aircraft. Previously, the technology was successfully evaluated on an American Airlines test aircraft and an ABX Air, Inc. cargo aircraft.

Raytheon Leads Team Bidding on Indian Satellite-Based Navigation System GAGAN

Raytheon Company is leading a team to deliver a comprehensive solution for the Indian Space Research Organization and Airports Authority of India global navigation satellite systems. This will complete the final phase of the Global Positioning Satellite-Aided Geosynchronous Augmented Navigation System, or GAGAN.

GAGAN will provide satellite-based navigation for civil aviation across South and East Asia, which will provide India with the most accurate, flexible and efficient air navigation system deployed.

Airbus Single-aisle Family “Approved” For On-board Mobile Phone System

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted Airbus the certification for the OnAir mobile telephony system on-board its whole A320 Family. The approval granted by the Agency covers all single-aisle types, the A318, A319, A320 and A321, and follows the first individual certification that was awarded in June 2007 for one individual A318.

Airbus is first to receive airworthiness certification for a cell-phone system on board a complete family of aircraft, for both production and forward-fit installation.

Boeing 777 Freighter Makes First Flight

The first Boeing 777 Freighter, the twin-engine cargo airplane, today successfully took to the sky for the first time and completed an initial series of tests during a flight lasting more than three-and-a-half hours. The Boeing says that he airplane performed well.

“The 777 Freighter completed the scheduled three-hour inaugural flight with no airplane performance-related issues,” said Dennis O’Donoghue, vice president of Flight Operations, Test & Validation. “The only issue was a data-communication problem between the airplane and the telemetry room at Boeing Field.”

Us and Canadian Firms to Build Heavy-Lift Rotorcraft

The Boeing Company and SkyHook International Inc. today announced a teaming agreement to develop the JHL-40 (Jess Heavy Lifter), a new commercial heavy-lift rotorcraft designed to address the limitations and expense of transporting equipment and materials in remote regions. Boeing has received the first increment of a multiyear contract from SkyHook to develop the new aircraft.

India French Space Joint Working Group Held at Goa

The Joint Working Group of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French Space Agency Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) met at Goa during July 5-6, 2008 to review the progress of on-going collaborative programmes under the chairmanship of Dr G Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO and Dr Yannick d`Escatha, President, CNES.

The status of Megha Topiques, an Indo-French collaborative satellite project scheduled for launch during 2009 for tropical weather monitoring was presented during the meeting. Megha Tropiques carries four payloads – a Microwave Radiometer, a humidity sounder, a radiation measuring instrument and a Radio occultation sounder for atmospheric studies. During the meeting, an Agreement between ISRO and CNES on the Data Policy for distribution of data received from Megha Tropiques was also signed.

Astrium successfully concludes Galileo In-Orbit Test

During approximately two months of in-space testing, known as the In-Orbit Test (IOT) phase, the Giove-B navigation satellite has performed excellently.

Engineers from Astrium, the prime contractor for Giove-B, presented the results of the tests at the European Space Research and Technology Centre ESTEC in Noordwijk, Holland. The key components of the Galileo* system, particularly the new signal generator and the extremely accurate Passive Hydrogen Maser atomic clock, proved to be perfectly fit for purpose, even when tested under real-time conditions. The European Space Agency ESA, on whose behalf the mission is being conducted, confirmed the successful conclusion of the test phase during the In-Orbit Test Review (ITR) which took place on 3 July 2008.

Central Europe will need some 460 new Aircraft within next 20 Years

Airbus forecasts that the Central European market will need some460 new passenger aircraft over the next 20 years, with a total market value of US$ 32 billion. Single-aisle aircraft will dominate deliveries and there is an increasing market for twin-aisle aircraft. In particular, there will be a large replacement opportunity in the region with nearly 90 per cent of the current 213 in-service aircraft to be replaced by more eco-efficient models.

According to Airbus’ 2007-2026 Global Market Forecast (GMF), Central European traffic will grow much faster than the world average of 4.9 per cent over the next 20 years, i.e. at a yearly rate of 6.7 per cent on average. Central Europe’s air travel has grown by 158 per cent since 2000, as a result of the large potential to increase the demand to travel. The Central Europe forecast is based on an analysis of 18 countries in which 30 airlines operate some 213 passenger aircraft today.

World War II Bombers Fly Missions From Museum

Three historic World War II bombers and a rare, two-seat P-51 fighter aircraft will be at The Museum of Flight from June 20–22 for ground tours and flights open to the public. The aircraft are on a 110-city national “Wings of Freedom Tour” sponsored by the non-profit Collings Foundation. The general public will have the opportunity to visit, explore and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The aircraft are scheduled to arrive Friday, June 20 at 2 p.m. and will be stationed at the Museum’s ramp on Boeing Field.
