SELEX Sistemi Integrati signed a contract worth 230 million Euro with the Gendarmerie Nationale Algérienne to provide a Large System for Homeland security. This agreement, is one of the most important ever subscribed by a Finmeccanica Company for the sale of Large Systems in the Homeland Security domain. SELEX Sistemi Integrati, together with other two Finmeccanica companies, SELEX Communications and Elsag Datamat, will provide equipments for surveillance and security and control, supported by a communications network able to integrate different technologies and services. The system is made of a flexible, open and modular command and control architecture, working through operational centres at regional and intermediate level, and of 250 local control centres, all over the interested areas. The whole system is also completed by mobile command posts.
The supply, in which SELEX Sistemi Integrati plays a major role as prime contractor, will be delivered within 30 months from the contract signature. The system will cover the Southern territory of Algeria.

The overall internal security situation in the country remained largely under control during 2007. The situation in Jammu & Kashmir showed perceptible improvement. In the North East, the situation in Assam, Manipur and Nagaland were the main areas of concern. On the Naxal front, the number of incidents and casualties showed a marginal decline. The communal situation remained under control during 2007. Some terrorist incidents took place in the hinterland, but security forces also succeeded in busting a large number of terrorist modules. A number of important initiatives were taken to strengthen the security apparatus in the country. Border Management continued to receive focused attention. Timely assistance was extended to the States, affected by natural disasters. Some of the important activities, initiatives and achievements of the Ministry of Home Affairs are mentioned below.

As per information available, in 2007, till 31-10-2007, there have been a total of 1285 naxalite incidents and 571 casualties, as against 1285 incidents and 610 casualties in the corresponding period of 2006. Of this, there have been 983 incidents and 467 casualties in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, till 31-10-2007, as against 1035 incidents and 507 casualties in these States in the corresponding period of 2006.
Regarding damage to property, the naxalites have been observed to be targeting certain types of Government buildings and infrastructure pertaining to road and rail transport and, in some cases, power transmission facilities. (more…)
