Karnataka polls 2013: Corrupt BJP out, Corrupt Congress in

Bangalore: Karnataka state assembly election 2013 results are out and Indian National Congress has so far won 117 seats and is leading at 4 seats (121), enabling it to form a majority government in the state. The poll was contest between a corrupt BJP, corrupt Congress, a corrupt JD (S) and a corrupt KJP.

BS Yeddyurappa led Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) managed to extract its revenge on BJP (38 wins and leading in 2) but BJP was correct in stating that Yeddyurappa is nobody without it. Yeddy’s KJP won just 4 seats and is leading in 2. A “shocked, upset and unhappy” BJP accepted the defeat and Yeddy factor. BJP senior leader Ravishankar Prasad stated that the decision on distancing from Yeddyurappa was correct as there was “serious issue of corruption and Lokayukta also took a cognizance”. he said that BJP tried accommodating Yeddyurappa. “Certain issues are non-negotiable and corruption is one such issue,” he Ravishankar said, but added “since 1989, one who wins Karnataka loses Lok Sabha. So I am sure we will win Lok Sabha.”

JD (S) is expected to be 2nd largest party along with BJP with 37 wins and lead in 3 seats.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the Congress legislators in the state will decide at the CLP meet as to who will lead the next government. Congress party’s Siddharamiah, Mallikarjun Kharge, G Parameshwara, DK Shivakumar and Veerappa Moily are top contenders for the post.

BJP and Congress release 1st list for Karnataka Assembly polls

Bangalore: The Bharitya Janta Party and the Congress party have released their first list of candidates for the 2013 assembly polls. BJP’s list on Friday had the names of one hundred forty candidates, including the state Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar for the Hubli – Dharwad central seat and senior leader K.S Eswarappa for Shimoga assembly seat. Party President Rajnath Singh presided over the finalisation of names in new Delhi.

Congress released a list of 177 candidates. State Party President G Parameshwara and Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah and former PCC Chief RV Deshpande, were the prominent names in the list. Other important names included former Information and Broadcasting Minister MH Ambareesh, MLA Krishna Byregowda and former Chief Minister S Bangarappa’s son Kumar Bangarappa S.

41.8 crore voters will vote for the 224 assembly seats of Karnataka, which will take place on 5th May 2013 and will be held in single phase. As per the election commission notification on 20th March, counting of votes from all 50446 polling stations will be held on 8th April 2013.

The term of the current Legislative Assembly of Karnataka will expire on 3rd June 2013.

Cauvery water sharing deadlock continues as talks fail

Bangalore: The row over sharing of the Cauvery waters between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is back to the Supreme Court with the Chief Ministers of the two states failing to arrive at an amicable solution to save farmers in distress.

Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar expressed inability to release 30 tmc ft of water from the Cauvery to meet the requirement of standing crops in the neighbouring state as demanded by his counterpart Ms J Jayalalithaa at a brief meeting between the two held at a five star hotel here at the instance of the Apex Court.

Shettar told the press that the state explained the distress situation in the state in view of the poor storage in the Cauvery Basin reservoirs due to failed monsoon season which has ended in the state.

The total storage was only 37 tmc ft and the drinking water requirement alone was around 20 tmc ft he explained as against the demand of release of 30 tmc ft of water by Ms Jayalalithaa over the next 15 days.

However, he denied the claim of Ms Jayalalithaa that Karnataka had ‘flatly refused to release even a drop of water’.

The issue would now come up before the Supreme Court on Friday.

Tamil Nadu to receive 4.81 tmc ft Kaveri River water between November 16 and 30

Bangalore: Cauvery monitoring committee has directed Karnataka to release Karnataka to release 4.81 thousand million cubic feet of water fro Kaveri River to Tamil Nadu over the next fortnight. This has been done in view of Tamil Nadu’s assertion that there was a shortfall of 52 TMC of water between June and September.

The CMC, headed by Water Resources Secretary DV Singh, said that Karnataka will have to release 4.81 TMC of water between November 16 and 30.

The Committee also refused to comment on the issue of settling the previous shortfall raised by Tamil Nadu as there was lack of consensus on the period of the monsoon season. The CMC will meet again on the 28th of this month to review the situation.

Yeddyurappa resigns

Karnataka CM B S Yeddyurappa finally ended the three-day standoff with BJP central leadership and submitted his resignation to the Governor. This came following his indictment in illegal mining scam by the Lokayukta. yeddy says that he has been accused unfairly. Amid high-voltage drama today, Yeddyurappa walked to the Raj Bhavan along with ministers and over 60 MLAs loyal to him and handed over the resignation letter to Governor H R Bhardwaj after a 38-month tumultuous stint in office.

Yeddyurappa said he was bowing to the directive of party seniors and stepping down as the chief minister “without any hesitation”. “No sacrifice is above party,” said Yeddyurappa, who remained defiant and kept the party in suspense till the last minute demanding that the high command announce a successor of his choice before he put in his papers.He said though his government worked sincerely to preserve the natural resources, accusations had been made against him, apparently referring to illegal mining on which Lokayukta Santosh Hegde had indicted him in his report, triggering a political storm.

The Governor H R Bharadwaj, who is also a questionable character, accepted the resignation and asked Teddy to continue till alternative arrangements are made. Yeddyurappa had faxed his resignation letter to BJP president Nitin Gadkari, easing some anxiety of the central leadership which was on tenterhooks all the three days.

Yeddyurappa, who was instrumental in bringing the first ever BJP rule in the South. He is an influential leader of the Lingayat community, stuck to his guns on the issue of his successor.

Yeddyurappa favoured Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, D V Sadananda Gowda to succeed him and conveyed his wish to the party leaders. However,there was a speculation that his bete-noire and BJP national general secretary H N Ananth Kumar’s name was also being considered.

Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley, the BJP’s fire fighters continued consultations with party top leaders including state unit president K S Eswarappa, Ananth Kumar and legislators to find a successor and ensure a smooth leadership change.

Yeddyurappa felt that Lokayuktha report has wrongly implicated him, despite making efforts to prevent looting of natural resources. “What’s the crime I committed? Iron ore wealth should not be looted…,” Yeddyurappa said.

Cricket goes Green in Garden City

With the World Cup fever gripping the entire nation, a group of city youngsters in Bangalore have decided to use the game to promote environment consciousness and prevent global warming by distributing free saplings.

Chowk Cricketers, an Palace Gutahalli based group of youngsters, have taken a unique step towards spreading awareness about global warming by organizing an inter-state Tennis ball cricket tournament “Go Green Bangalore 2011” at Vyalikaval grounds, Palace Gutahalli on 27th March 2011. Seventeen teams from across the state and one team from Andhra Pradesh are participating in it.

Mohammed Inaam, Convenor of the tournament said, “The tournament, sponsored by Maxworth Realty (I) Ltd., has been organized to create awareness about effects of global warming among the masses which include auto / cab drivers, construction site workers and labourers, who can make a huge difference in arresting the pollution in Bangalore and Karnataka state. Nash eleven demolished the attack of Dolphin teams’ bowlers to clinch a clear win in the final match of the GO Green cricket tournament which was held at Vyalikaval Grounds on Sunday March 27, 2011.
