The coal based Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station is located in Singrauli district in Madhya Pradesh. Stage V of the project is also under plans.

The project benefits western region including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Daman & Diu.

The total installed capacity of NTPC group has increased to 40674 MW, with the commissioning.

With this facility, Kalpataru Power’s manufacturing capacity has increased to over 160,000 NIT’s. It also makes KPTL holding the largest tower manufacturing capacities the country.

The plant is expected to cater to demand in the central and eastern belt of India and achieve freight cost savings.

Kalpataru release says the plant would further strengthen company’s ability to competitively execute large transmission projects across the globe.

After commission, the total installed capacity of Vallur Thermal Power Project has become increased to 1000 MW and the total installed capacity of NTPC group has become 40174 MW.

Located in Vallur Village in North Chennai, the project is planned to have a 3rd stage with one more 500 WM unit.

Once completed, the project will have 1500 MW installed capacity.

The project is slated to be commissioned in the FY 2013-14, in the state of Rajasthan.

ONGC currently has an existing installed base of 51MW from wind energy projects operating in Jakhau site, Gujarat. The new order will take ONGC’s total installed wind power capacity 153.9 MW.

The S88 turbine is designed for operations in medium wind regimes with the ability to withstand extreme conditions and operate effectively with lower maintenance costs. The S88 has received international orders. Over 2,400 units of S88 have been installed worldwide, translating to over 5 GW of capacity.

On importance of metering, Chaturvedi said “There is a need for expansion of metering in the rural areas. Even relatively developed States like Andhra Pradesh don’t have metering in rural areas.”

Speaking about power generation, Chaturvedi said India has set a target of 88.5 Giga Watt the 12th Five year plan. For achieving this, an investment of 12.5 lakh crore is required in power generation, transmission & distribution.

“By 2030 the per capita income in India is expected to increase up to $6,000 to 8,000 per annum from current $1,400-1,500 per annum. This will automatically result in increase in demand for power and, therefore, electrical equipment. By 2030 the total power generation requirement in India is expected to grow to 900 to 1,100 Giga Watt,” he added.

K K Agarwal, Member (Grid Operations & Distribution), Central Electric Authority, said ” Various countries are moving towards smart grids. 14 Pilot Projects have been planned across the country in which 50% funding will be made by Government of India and the rest 50% by state utilities.”

The seminar was organised by Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), the apex association of electrical equipment manufacturers in India.

Auckland Jute Mills Pvt Ltd is situated at Jagatdal, Shyamnagar Township, North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. The proposed project site is situated on the banks of river Ganges and is well connected by roadways and is 2-3 km away from Shyamnagar Railway station.

The rooftop of the factory building of the Jute Mill has been identified for installation covering an area of more than 4 lakh sq. ft. Generated DC power will be converted to 3 phase AC power via Smart grid tied inverters. The AC power shall be further stepped up to high voltage and fed through transformers to utility grid and evacuate through Auckland Jute Mill’s own 3.3 kV substation to the nearest Bhatpara Township Substation, which is situated approximately less than 1KM away from the factory toward south.

Jai Kumar Kankaria, Director, Aukland Jute Mills, said, “I am very positive about solar power since eventually power cost will increase and solar will be the cheapest mode of electricity. Also we are looking forward to this project and hopeful that the government soon passes the REC policy so that we can install additional 5 to 10 MW of power plant at our jute mill. That will also make the project commercially viable.”

The project has been initiated, funded and overseen by Member of parliament P K Biju under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS Scheme) and implemented by the Hope foundation, an NGO based out of Palakkad. The technology partners and implementation agency, Nature 2 Nature Ecosystem (P) Ltd, have set up the state of the art micro grid, a central solar power plant, which can deliver AC quality high voltage (230 V AC) power to these homes. The homes have been wired with all electrical connections, two holders, two switches and a power plug with switch for mobile charging. Light is provided through 2 imported high quality 7.5 W Led Lamps.

“All generation and related data will be logged and can be monitored remotely on net enabled PCs or tablets which would also alert. The plant can be expanded in the future to either provide power to more houses or to connect additional loads such as community TVs or a PC for the modest Anganwadi,” says Suni Ramakrishnan, Director of Nature 2 Nature Ecosystem. The company operates out of Cochin, Madurai on PAN INDIA off-grid and grid-tie SPV projects.

The state of the art project has set a standard and example for similar micro grid based solar electrification possibilities in other remote and rural villages where grid power supply is still a distant possibility.

“Solar energy is ideally suited to India because it has available land with strong sunlight. Solar plants are easy to install, even in remote communities that currently have no other access to energy, suit small-scale demand, and are relatively cheap to operate and maintain,” said Philip Erquiaga, Director General of ADB’s Private Sector Operations Department. “In a world of depleting fossil fuels, solar energy is a long-term, sustainable solution to India’s energy needs and security.”

With 300 sunny days, India has a huge solar power potential. However, due to high capital cost and long term gestation in terms of finance, solar power generation is not able to catch up. ADB’s partial guarantees on loans of up to 15 years will make the longer-tenor loans to solar power projects more attractive to banks and the projects. These guarantees will support projects of up to 25 megawatts. ADB is also separately considering direct finance for larger solar power projects with the private sector in India.

“What we do in the next 2-3 years is critical for the solar program in India. Banks that finance projects alongside ADB will become more comfortable with solar power and this in turn will eventually transform market risk perceptions and induce other banks to lend to the sector without ADB support,” said Don Purka, Senior Investment Officer in ADB’s Private Sector Operations Department.

Indian Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission intends to commission 20,000 megawatts in grid-connected solar power by 2022.

In addition, ADB is also providing $1.25 million to provide training on solar technology and risk issues and assist participating banks to carry out technical due diligence on individual solar projects. A grant of $500,000 will be provided from ADB’s concessional Technical Assistance Special Fund, with the other $750,000 grant coming from the Government of Japan-established Asian Clean Energy Fund. This fund is part of the ADB-administered Clean Energy Financing Partnership Facility.

The solar farm has been commissioned using amorphous silicon Thin Film technology which is best suited for the Indian climatic conditions and is connected to the 110 KVA local grid. The project had been awarded by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) and is being implemented under the Generation Based Incentive scheme of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India. The project awarded on the basis of a global bid is the first of its kind in the solar farm category to be commissioned in India under the phase 1 of the National Solar Mission.

Speaking about this major achievement, Ratul Puri, Director, Moser Baer Projects Private Limited, said “The successful commissioning of the first of its kind of solar farm at Sivaganga vindicates our deep rooted beliefs in our innate capabilities to commission large scale solar farms. As per official estimates, India receives solar radiation of about 5000 Trillion Kwh/Yr. This equates to 4-7 kWh/sqm/yr which is more than India’s total energy consumption (848 billion Kwhr – as projected by CEA). It is evident that India has immense potential and we need to ramp up rapidly in the right direction.”

Citing a report of CIBC Oppenheimer (a leading investment bank in Canada) Ratul stressed that around 85% of India’s aggregate economic demand is domestically driven and to power this requirement many more large solar farms have to be commissioned on fast track. The panels installed at Sivaganga Project were procured from Moser Baer Solar Limited, which is today one of the top players in the global solar market. These panels were used as they are best suited in ramping up grid connected solar farms in high ambient temperature region like India.

An agreement between Areva and NPC is expected to be signed during French President Nicholas Sarkozy’s India visit next month.

NPC expects the first unit of the project to be commissioned by 2017-18. The project was opposed by groups like the Konkan Bachao Samiti which expressed concern about the radiological safety of the nuclear plant and its impact on the environment. The National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) had alleged that it is based on generic and incomplete inputs on radioactive threats. Some villagers have also opposed acquisition of their land for the project.
