The Indian AEW&C project detailed

Embraer and the Indian Government have signed a deal for three EMB 145 AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning & Control) jets. The contract includes a comprehensive logistics package comprised of training, technical support, spare parts, and ground support equipment. The first delivery is scheduled for 2011. The three aircraft will be outfitted by the customer with cabin equipment and mission systems. Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a unit of DRDO is the central agency for integration and delivery of the AEW&C.

IAF to depart on 7th July to US for Red Flag Exercises

The Indian Air Force would be participating in a multinational Air Exercise, ‘Ex - Red Flag 08’ at the invitation of United States Air Force (USAF), scheduled to be held at Nellis Air Force Base in the US from 09-23 Aug 08.

The IAF would be participating in the exercise with eight SU-30 MK-I aircraft, two IL-78 air to air refuellers and one IL-76 transport aircraft. The contingent would comprise 156 personnel below officers rank and 91 officers (inclusive of 10 members of ‘Garud’ IAF Special Force team). The contingent is being led by Gp Capt D Chaudhury and Exercise Coordinator would be Gp Capt Ajay Rathore.

The Indian Air-borne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) System to be integrated on to the Brazilian EMB-145 Aircraft

The Centre for Air-Borne Systems (CABS), DRDO, Bangalore, is developing an Air-borne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The AEW&C Mission system comprises many sub-systems like Radar and communication links, that are being designed and developed by DRDO. This is a multi-laboratory programme of DRDO coordinated by CABS, Bangalore. The indigenous AEW&C Mission system will be optimally integrated onboard the Brazilian regional jet aircraft, EMB-145 as per IAF requirement.

Indigenous MFDs for Indian Air Force SU-30 MKI’s

Samtel Display Systems manufacturer of avionic equipments and systems, today announced that the indigenous Multi Functional Displays (MFD), jointly developed with Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) (DRDO) and manufactured by them have got clearance for flight testing from RCMA (Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness), and was subsequently followed by flight trials.

IAF Chief visits forward air bases in Jammu and Kashmir

The Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal FH Major PVSM AVSM SC VM ADC Visited AF Stn Leh, AF Stn Thoise and Base Camp in Ladakh sector from 20 Jun 08 to 21 Jun 08. His tour of AF Stn Leh and the Base camp was accompanied by Air Cmde KS Gill YSM, VM Air Officer Commanding AF Stn Leh.

He flew over the glacier and very high altitude posts himself to asses the situation. He met and interacted with air warriors at the Base Camp in Siachen Glacier.

Second of Indian Limited Series Production aircraft “Tejas” makes maiden flight

The much-awaited maiden flight of Tejas LSP-2 took place today at HAL airport Bangalore. Even though the aircraft was ready for its maiden flight last week itself, the flight could not take place because of the pre-monsoon weather prevailing over Bangalore. The flight was conducted by National Flight Test Centre (NFTC) of Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

The aircraft was flown by NFTC test pilot Wg Cdr N Tiwari. As has been the practice, the maiden flight of this aircraft was chased by another Tejas aircraft PV3, piloted by Wg Cdr RR Tyagi. The test was conducted from NFTC’s telemetry station, with Wg Cdr M Prabhu, flight test engineer, as the test director. Today’s maiden flight of LSP2 was significant on several accounts.

IAF’s largest ever airlift across the border relief

The Indian Air Force is presently carrying out the largest ever across the border disaster relief mission to Myanmar and China having conveyed over 277 tonnes of relief material in the aftermath of cyclone and severe earthquake respectively. Another IL-76 of IAF ferried 28 tones to Chengdu in China today.

cyclone Nargis struck south-east coast of Myanmar on 03 May 08 and caused wide spread damage to life and property. Also a severe earthquake measuring over 7.8 on Richter scale had struck the Sichuan province of China causing severe disaster. The Indian Air Force was called upon to carry relief supplies to these disaster affected areas.

Hawk aircraft deliveries to India unaffected

Indian ministry of Defence clarified that the supply of Hawk aircraft has not been stopped. In fact, two aircraft arrived from UK today, along with large quantities of spares, as per the induction plan. Two more aircraft would arrive in the first week of Jun 08.

After the accident on 29 Apr 08, aircraft were not grounded, but flying was temporarily suspended for carrying out checks to rule out critical system failure especially as the aircraft are under warranty. This is a normal practice followed after any serious accident.

Air Marshal Sumit Mukerji takes over as Air Officer-In-Charge Personnel, IAF

Air Marshal Sumit Mukerji has taken over as Air Officer-in-charge Personnel at Air Headquarters (Vayu Bhawan) in New Delhi, today. Air Marshal Sumit Mukerji has replaced Air Marshal VR Iyer who has proceeded to Training Command as Air Officer Commanding –in-Chief.

Air Marshal Mukerji was born on 26 Jun 1951 at New Delhi. A product of Sherwood College, Nainital, he graduated from the National Defence Academy in 1970 and was commissioned on 22 Jan 1972. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor (Cat ‘A’), a Fighter Combat Leader and a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College. He was also an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College.

Gripen submits MRCA proposal to India

In New Delhi today 28 April 2008 Saab, acting through its Gripen International Business Unit, handed-over its compliant response to the Ministry of Defence, government of India Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) for the Indian Air Force.

Boeing submits its F/A-18E/F proposal for Indian MRCA

The Boeing Company today delivered a detailed, 7,000-page proposal offering its advanced F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to the Indian Air Force as part of India’s Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition.

“Our proposal team worked diligently to fully understand and meet the requirements set out by the Indian Ministry of Defense (MOD). We are offering India the best-value, most advanced and proven multirole combat fighter in production today,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (IDS).
