EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division advanced aerial refueling boom has confirmed its ability to support large U.S., NATO and allied air forces by performing multiple aerial refueling contacts with an operational French AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft. Performed on Friday , July 18, over Spanish air space and under control of Spanish air traffic controllers, the demonstration mission used a fully-operational ARBS, which is installed on an A310 test-bed aircraft.

The Boeing Company today announced an agreement to acquire Insitu, Inc., a pioneer in the unmanned air systems (UAS) market and leader in the design, development and manufacture of high-performance, low-cost UAS used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
Boeing and Insitu have partnered since 2002 and together developed the successful ScanEagle™ UAS program, which has more than 100,000 operational flight hours with the U.S. Department of Defense and international customers. Insitu’s key technologies and advanced capabilities in rapid prototyping and manufacturing are driving its revenue to an anticipated $150 million this year, 70 percent higher than in 2007, and have it well positioned for the future.

BAE Systems today announces a three-year programme that will fully implement and embed all 23 recommendations of the Woolf Committee Report. After a thorough review of the Report, an implementation programme has been developed that will deliver the Company’s goal to achieve benchmark standards of governance in the conduct of its day-to-day business.
The Woolf Committee, which was asked to examine the ethical principles and practices underlying the company’s business, identified various areas for further improvement that the Company should address in order to be recognised as a global leader in ethical business conduct.

AgustaWestland signed a contract to supply 18 AW139 medium twin helicopters to the Qatar Armed
Forces. These aircraft will be operated by the Qatar Emiri Air Force supporting various Government
Agencies to perform several roles including utility, troop transport, search and rescue, border patrol,
special forces operations, law enforcement and homeland security duties. The contract value is about
260 million Euro and includes crews training and initial spares package.
This contract marks the continued success of the AW139 in the Middle East market with over 100
units purchased in the region. This order increases the sales total to more than 370 helicopters
ordered by over 100 customers in nearly 40 countries.

A team, led by a number of recently qualified engineers and scientists from QinetiQ’s Cortex early career training scheme, has entered an innovative and highly versatile unmanned air vehicle (UAV) for the MOD’s Grand Challenge – a competition designed to encourage younger engineers and scientists to champion the development of a system with a high degree of autonomy that can detect, identify, monitor and report a comprehensive range of military threats in an urban environment. QinetiQ’s Grand Challenge entry can take off vertically – so the operator is not exposed, and then transition into conventional flight to provide range and operational duration.

Thales and Furuno Electric jointly introduced a first new radar, Coastwatcher 10, which provides a high performance low-cost solution for short range maritime surveillance. Coastwatcher 10 combines a standard Furuno FAR-2157 navigation radar with Thales’s small target post-processor. Coastwatcher 10 is designed to detect and track a wide range of asymmetric surface threats and unidentified targets with very low signatures in a wide range of sea conditions.
The new radar can also be offered as an upgrade or retrofit package on existing Furuno radars to enhance small target detection operations. Coastwatcher 10 benefits from both companies’ skills in signal processing, radar technology and extended services supported by a dedicated worldwide network.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected to provide its laser-based Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures Systems (LAIRCM) for the U.K. Royal Air Force’s (RAF) air-to-air refueling and transport aircraft.
Under the terms of the $93 million contract, Northrop Grumman’s Defensive Systems Division will provide LAIRCM system hardware and support for the U.K.’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft program (FSTA) to Thales U.K., a member of the AirTanker consortium.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has begun production of the fuselage section for the first F/A-18F Super Hornet for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Mechanics loaded the aircraft’s first bulkhead components into place July 10 on Northrop Grumman’s state-of-the-art F/A-18 assembly line in El Segundo. The government of Australia is purchasing 24 F/A-18Fs from the United States in the first international procurement of the Super Hornet. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is already in service with the U.S. Navy as its combat-proven strike fighter.
As principal subcontractor to The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman is responsible for design and production of the F/A-18E/F’s center/aft fuselage section and twin vertical tails, integration of all associated subsystems and after-delivery product support. (The “E” model has one cockpit seat; the “F” has two.) Northrop Grumman has delivered more than 1,800 of these fuselage “shipsets.”

The Boeing Company has successfully conducted the first flight test of the first 737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft modified by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Ankara for Turkey’s Peace Eagle program.

A new approach to purchasing the UK armed forces’ complex weapons took a step forward on 15th July, with the launch of an Assessment Phase for Team Complex Weapons (Team CW), an innovative partnership between the Ministry of Defence, MBDA (UK), Thales UK, QinetiQ and Roxel UK Ltd.
The Teaming Agreement, signed by all Team CW members, creates the environment necessary to develop a partnering approach to the planning and delivery of a long term strategy for the Complex Weapons sector in the UK. The Assessment Phase of the Team CW Programme will assess this radically new approach to develop and produce the UK’s military requirements for the next generation of missiles and guided weapons for the armed forces.

Rheinmetall Defence announced today that the U.S. Marine Corps placed a new $61M delivery order for MK281 cartridges with the Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group. The new delivery order signifies the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) continued commitment to align its procurements with the Department of Defense’s initiative to field safer, “Green” training ammunition.
