Birla A1 Premium Cement is sponsoring the 3rd Inland Hobie 16 Sailing Championships 2011. The main objective behind this entire event is to make HOBIE SAILING popular in India and to provide the platform to all desired in the sport of sailing and to promote it as a Tourism/Leisure activity.

This edition of the Championship is being organized by AWSA in association with SAAP, in which the ace yachtsmen of the country will unveil a grand show of sailing skills against the unruly winds and formidable waters. To name a few, K Yakobu & Taramati Matiwade, the Golden pair from “Sail the Gulf” will be competing against each other. Two more lady teams are now getting ready for a tough competition
against Taramati for the Best Lady Sailor Trophy. Among the local sailors, Aniroodh, who has been sailing Hobie since 2002 will be along

with the ace sailors from EME Sailing Association (EMESA) & AWSA. A total of 16 teams from nine different sailing Clubs i.e., Army Yachting Node (AYN) Mumbai, Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) Mumbai, INWTC –Vizag, INWTC – Kochi, Dolphin Yachting Association Vizag, Yachting Association of Vizag, Indian Water Sports Association(IWSA) Pune, EMESA – Secunderabad & AWSA – Hyderabad, have given entries till date which will certainly go up in another two days.

The Hobie Cat 16 is 16’7″ long, 7’11″ wide, and has a mast 26’6″ tall, but only weighs 145 kgs. The Hobie 16 has asymmetrical hulls which act like foils and keep the boat from crabbing, or slipping sideways from the force of the wind. A trapeze is usually used by the crew. The fastest CATAMARAN in India can move with the speed of breeze and can be sailed by persons of all age groups.

It requires a minimum crew of two persons and can be sailed by four persons. This sport is most popular in foreign countries, and is now capturing the crowd in India.

This year aims to give a new outlook to the event by adding the element of glitz and glamour and hopes to attract a huge crowd. The closing ceremony shall culminate with the Annual Ball on 17th July 2011 at Hotel Marriott, 7pm onwards.
