Air Astana, the national airline of Kazakhstan, has selected Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines for its initial three Boeing 787-8s, plus a further three of the twinjets for which it has purchase rights.

The value of the firm business is $90 million at engine list prices. Deliveries will begin in 2016. Air Astana, which takes its name from Kazakhstan’s capital city, began operating in 2002, and has a network of 25 domestic and 21 international routes.

Its fleet includes Boeing 757s powered by Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4 engines, and A320s with V2500 engines, produced by the International Aero Engines consortium in which Rolls-Royce is a senior shareholder.

Including business still to be announced, orders have been placed for over 700 Trent 1000 engines by 23 customers, including five leasing companies – approximately half the Boeing 787 customers who have made an engine decision.

The Trent is the launch engine for all versions of the 787, which will enter service later this year.
