Accident on Russian nuclear submarine in the waters of the Sea of Japan

As per Russian military sources, on 8th November, 2008, a nuclear submarine under going factory tests, at the Pacific Fleet site, in the waters of the Sea of Japan, as a result of unauthorized operation of fire-fighting system in 1 and 2 compartments, has resulted in more than 20 people killed and 21 injured 21. Among the dead were both shipyard workers of Komsomolsk on-Amur shipyardand and military personnel.

The Russian sources say that the submarine has not suffered any damage. The main power plant (reactor compartment) works in the staffing mode and the radiation on the boat to normal. The submarine was moving independently, accompanied by a rescue vessel Sayan. The injured were evacuated on board a large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs and taken ashore and placed in fleet hospital.

On board the submarine were 208 people, including 81 sailors.

A decision on the return of the boat at the point of a temporary home in Primorye. In connection with this incident, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev instructed the Attorney-General Yuri Chaika to conduct a full investigation into an accident.

Coincidently, Russian Akula II Class Nerpa nuclear attack submarine is also undergoing sea trials at Primorye Territory in southeastern Russia. Although Russian officials have not officially declared, the submarine is most likely to be Russian Akula II Class Nerpa nuclear attack submarine. The same submarine is rumored to be leased to India, something which Russians deny. Primorsky Krai or Primorye borders with China.
