Lt. General Henry A. “Trey” Obering, Missile Defense Agency director, announced today that all six chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) modules have been installed aboard the Airborne Laser (ABL) aircraft. The ABL is being developed as a potential element of the nation’s ballistic missile defense system, and is the first to use directed energy to destroy ballistic missiles in their “boost” phase of flight.
The six COIL modules form the heart of the ABL’s megawatt-class chemical laser. Each module is roughly the size of a Mini Cooper automobile, and altogether the size of a large sport utility vehicle. The COIL sits in the rear of the highly modified 747-400F ABL aircraft. The modules house the chemical reactions required to generate the energy necessary to destroy a ballistic missile in flight. The COIL was successfully tested on the ground in 2005, demonstrating operationally significant power levels and lase durations.

Sarab Ahluwalia won his Vir Chakra in 1971, when the Bangladesh War was being won in the East, he got his decoration in the West, high in the high Himalayas in Ladakh. He also got to have, soon afterwards, as a result of his combat experience in high altitude, severe frost bite, following which, many of his toes were amputated in Military Hospital Delhi Cantt. This gallant silent night assault, to capture a strongly held enemy ( Karakoram Scouts of the Pakistani Army) held defensive position near feature “Vee” at over 18, 400 feet is an all time world-record in the Guiness Book of World Records! One also needs to read, “The Heights of Madness” by a lady British journalist to get the import of the mind-numbing folly in the Karakorams.
It was all out in the Times of India then. He was with the Ladakh Scouts those days. They captured their objective bang on the dot, but had more casualties owing to the extreme high altitude arctic snow conditions than enemy fire! But they took their objective alright in the right & true traditions of the nunu cheerfully smiling all the way and also mouthing the blood curdling ki ki so so largayalo war-cry of the Ladakhi warriors & the somber, lumbering loping Jat guts of The Grinders, the Colonel of which Alu finally became by popular vote. He retired, from Rajouri a few years back where he was the Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 25 Infantry Division on the LoC. In between a VSM was conferred on him for outstanding leadership whilst leading his brigade in counter-insurgency operations in the Punjab. He is also the recipient of the Army Chief’s Commendation!
