There are head winds and rough seas blowing for the professional Indian Navy which has laid out ambitious plans for this decade and unless it gets it act together it looks like the Indian Navy will be like the rest of Government controlled India. Ambitious plans and poor execution a malady which Indian Government has suffered from because of myopic vision in ensuring success on ground. But the Navy is lucky, there are no war clouds on the horizon and all its neighbours are in turmoil. Pakistan is beset with Jehadi furore and President Musharraf’s rule is in question but there appears no alternative. Bangladesh is under military rule but for how long? Nepal goes in to elections and if Maoists gain the upper hand there could be surprises for India as Naxal and Maoists are rearing larger heads in India.
Finally Sri Lanka looks to India to give finishing touches to a settlement as the LTTE is down but not out. In such a scenario India comes out like a Lilly White Flower and its Navy has the least of the challenges that the Army or Air Force face. But the Navy does have challenges if it is to meet the 12th Plan target of 147 ships, 100 aircraft, two carrier battle groups and two line submarine building lines.
