Project for construction of three stealth frigates at Mazgaon Dock Limited (MDL) was sanctioned in 1998 with scheduled delivery as December 2005, December 2006 & 2007 for the three ships. However, the schedule was revised both for stealth frigates and missile destroyers. Now, these projects are progressing as per the revised schedule of delivery without slippage.
The major reasons for the delays are; Concurrent design and construction of warships, Delay in finalization of system and system interfaces for developmental equipment, Delay in ordering of some weapon systems and Non performance of some of the indigenous vendors.
Important steps taken by having stringent monitoring mechanism on half yearly basis by Apex Steering Committee under Secretary (Defence Production) and quarterly review by Controller of Warship Production and Acquisitions, half yearly review at Inter Governmental level for Russian equipment and delegation of enhanced financial power to MDL.

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s relative navigation software and highly accurate fiber-optic inertial navigation system provided the precise positioning information used to successfully complete the positions and pathways flight test of Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) program.
“Northrop Grumman’s relative navigation algorithms were the key to the positions and pathways flight test,” said Jacob Hinchman, AAR program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory. “These algorithms provided a new level of accuracy in fused precision global positioning system/inertial navigation system relative positioning.”
The AFRL’s Air Vehicle Directorate AAR flight tests, completed in Sept. 2007, were performed using a Learjet, which acted as a surrogate for an unmanned refueling receiver aircraft. The purpose of the AAR program is to demonstrate the capability of refueling unmanned aerial vehicles with the existing Air Force tanker fleet. The flight tests demonstrated the ability of the AAR system to autonomously execute aerial refueling maneuvers in close proximity to a tanker and to practice breakaways. (more…)

EADS Defence & Security (DS) will equip German naval vessels with identification systems, which will help to avoid confrontations with unknown aircraft. The so-called IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) systems work on the basis of state-of-the-art digital and encryption technology in line with the latest Mode S identification process, which is intended to prevent critical situations through fast recognition of aircraft, as was the case with the UNIFIL mission off the Lebanon’s coast.
As the company announced on Friday, Defence Electronics, an integrated Business Unit of EADS Defence & Security, equipped two further S143a class fast patrol boats with the MSSR 2000 I identification system and accepted them in October in a record time of only 20 days from the request by the customer to the boats’ departure for Lebanon. This means that since the beginning of the year, 9 naval vessels have been equipped and others are to follow by the beginning of 2008. (more…)
