CISF gets unit for VIP Protection

A separate unit, called Special Security Group, has been constituted in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for protection of VIPs.

As per the report received from CISF, a total of 998 security personnel out of the sanctioned strength of 1200 for this unit have been trained in VIP security duties so far. There are 23 lady personnel deployed in this unit.

These security personnel are deployed for providing security to central protectees as per requirements.

Oman F-16’s get Airborne Reconnaissance System camera

Third West Virginia Air National Guard C-130 arrives for Avionics Modernization

The Boeing Company yesterday inducted the third U.S. Air Force C-130 into the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) at company facilities in San Antonio, Texas, where it will receive a fully integrated, night vision goggle-compatible digital glass cockpit and a new digital avionics system.

India fencing Bangladesh border

The Government of India has sanctioned 3406 kms of fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Out of this, 2529 kms of fencing has been erected. A pilot project of 277 kms of flood-lighting in the West Bengal sector was sanctioned and has since been completed.

An amount of Rs.2881.58 crore has been incurred on border works which includes the expenditure incurred on the construction of 3246 kms of roads and 23051 mtrs. of bridges.

The project is likely to be completed by 2008-09.

India takes steps taken to streamline intelligence network

In order to optimize intelligence flow and coordination between multifarious agencies at the Centre and in the States in the field of counter-terrorism and counter- intelligence, a Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) and Joint Task Force on Intelligence (JTFI) have been created in the Intelligence Bureau at Delhi, supported by Subsidiary Multi-Agency Centres (SMACs) at almost all State capitals. Steps have also been taken to strengthen counter-intelligence apparatus in the Intelligence Bureau.

Further, the States have been asked to revamp the Special Branches by way of filling up of vacancies; posting of competent officers in Special Branches; mandatory tenure preferably of 5 years for personnel in Special Branches and linkage of this requirement with promotion; system of incentives/disincentives; dedicated staff for intelligence work right up to the police stations level and re-activating beat constable system; making available modern equipment and gadgets for interception; special training for personnel posted in Special Branches and earmarking of up to 5% of their annual allocations under the Scheme for Modernisation of State Police Forces for strengthening of Special Branches.

Blackwater faces new death claims and drug allegations

The estates of two more Iraqis killed when Blackwater USA personnel allegedly opened fire on civilians in Nisoor Square in Baghdad on Sept. 16 and an injured survivor of the incident joined the pending civil litigation against the private military contractor late Monday.

Survivor Abdulwahab Abdulqadir Al-Qalamchi and the estates of Dr.Mahasin Mohson Kadhum and her son, Ahmed Hathem Al-Rubaie, filed new claims against Blackwater and affiliated companies in Washington federal court,according to their U.S.-based legal team.

According to the lawsuit, Dr. Kadhum was a doctor in Baghdad whose son,a second-year medical student, was shot to death before her eyes; she was then shot to death as she cradled her dead son’s body, calling for help.

Contractors selected for for the prototype phase of Swiss IMESS

Defence & Communications Systems (DCS) as prime contractor, and Sagem Défense Sécurité from SAFRAN Group as main subcontractor have been awarded an exclusive contract with armasuisse, the Procurement, Technology and Real Estate Center of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport DDPS, for the prototype phase of IMESS, the future soldier modernisation programme, with options for a subsequent industrialisation and first series delivery.

IMESS is a programme for the modernization of the Swiss infantry fighting capabilities from a single soldier up to platoon level.

The framework contract includes a first development phase plus options for series productions worth more than 120 M €. The prototype phase will be finalized in September 2008 followed by an optional industrialization phase in 2009 and optional series production phases in 2010 and 2014, according to current master planning (procurement bills RP 09 and RP 13). The procurement of series is subject to approval by Swiss Parliament.

Chinese and Bangladeshi units arrive in Darfur

At the weekend 135 troops from a Chinese engineering company that will eventually number 315 arrived in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, to begin their deployment, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters in New York today.

The advance Chinese troops are part of the UN’s support package to AMIS and will help pave the way for the deployment of UNAMID by undertaking work critical to the establishment of the hybrid mission, Ms. Montas added.

A separate Bangladeshi Formed Police Unit (FPU) also arrived in Nyala late last week to begin work supporting AMIS.

US Achieves First Submerged Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Recovery by a Submarine

The Boeing Company has successfully demonstrated for the first time that an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) can be recovered by an underway submerged submarine, opening up new possibilities for advanced naval operations. During recent tests, a U.S. Navy attack submarine launched the AN/BLQ-11 UUV from one of its torpedo tubes. The vehicle, formerly called the Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System (LMRS), then returned to the vessel, where the system’s robotic arm retrieved it into the submarine.

GE Awarded Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine Contract by U.S. Army

GE has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by the U.S. Army covering the next phase of the Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine (AATE) program. Under this contract, GE will continue to collaborate with the Army and invest in state-of-the-art engineering and design proficiencies that will help establish the next-generation military attack and utility helicopter powerplant.

The objective of AATE is the development of a 3,000-shaft-horsepower engine to demonstrate advanced gas turbine technology that improves power performance and fuel consumption characteristics and also enhances part durability and reliability. These attributes are needed to meet the emerging endurance and cruise requirements associated with future Army aviation platforms.

Boeing and AFRL Demonstrate First-Ever Supersonic Munitions Release

Boeing and the U.S. Air Force have successfully demonstrated how an innovative application of a technology called active flow control enables — for the first time — munitions to be safely released from a weapons bay at high supersonic speeds.

Saab design Combat Management System for Australia’s LHD

In June this year the Australian government announced an order for two new amphibious ships for the Australian Defence Force from Tenix-Navantia. As part of this decision the government nominated the Saab 9LV combat management system as the preferred system.
